“You have a mania for simplifying everything,” answered the Englishman, irritated.
“너는 모든 걸 단순화하려는 버릇이 있구나.” 영국인이 짜증스럽다는 듯 대답했다.
“Alchemy is a serious discipline. Every step has to be followed exactly as it was followed by the masters.”
“연금술은 엄격한 학문이란다. 모든 과정은 옛 스승들이 했던 것과 똑같이 한 치의 오차도 없이 따라야만 하지.”
The boy learned that the liquid part of the Master Work was called the Elixir of Life, and that it cured all illnesses;
소년은 위대한 업의 액체 부분을 ‘생명의 엘릭시르’라고 부르며, 그것이 모든 질병을 고쳐준다는 사실을 알게 되었다.

또한 그것은 연금술사가 늙지 않게 해주었다. 고체 부분은 ‘철학자의 돌’이라고 불렸다.

“The alchemists spent years in their laboratories, observing the fire that purified the metals.”
“연금술사들은 금속을 정제하는 불꽃을 관찰하며 실험실에서 수년의 세월을 보내지.”
“They spent so much time close to the fire that gradually they gave up the vanities of the world.”
“그들은 불 곁에서 아주 오랜 시간을 보내며 점차 세상의 헛된 욕망들을 버리게 된단다.”
불꽃을 응시하며 금속의 불순물을 제거하는 기나긴 인고의 시간은, 연금술사들로 하여금 자신의 내면에 깃든 헛된 욕심까지도 함께 태워버리게 만들었음을 보여줍니다.

소년은 크리스털 상인을 떠올렸다. 상인은 소년이 크리스털을 닦는 것이 좋은 일이라고 말했었다.

The boy was becoming more and more convinced that alchemy could be learned in one’s daily life.
소년은 연금술이란 것도 결국 일상생활 속에서 배울 수 있는 게 아닐까 하는 확신이 점점 더 강해졌다.
금속을 닦는 것이나 유리잔을 닦는 것 모두 마음을 정화하는 수행의 과정이 될 수 있다는 소년의 통찰이 돋보이는 대목이군요.
