제1부
THE BOY’S NAME WAS SANTIAGO. DUSK WAS FALLING AS the boy arrived with his herd at an abandoned church.
소년의 이름은 산티아고였다. 양 떼를 몰고 버려진 어느 교회에 도착했을 때, 세상은 이미 어스름한 황혼에 물들어 있었다.
주인공인 산티아고가 처음 등장합니다. 스페인 안달루시아 지방의 평화로운 들판에서 양들을 돌보며 살아가는 젊은 양치기 청년이죠.
The roof had fallen in long ago, and an enormous sycamore had grown on the spot where the sacristy had once stood.
지붕은 오래전에 무너져 내렸고, 예전에 제구실을 하던 제단 터에는 커다란 플라타너스 한 그루가 자라나 있었다.
여기서 sacristy는 성당이나 교회에서 신부님이 미사를 준비하며 옷을 갈아입거나 제구들을 보관하는 제의실을 뜻합니다. 신성했던 장소가 자연의 일부로 변해버린 풍경이 그려지는군요.
He decided to spend the night there. He saw to it that all the sheep entered through the ruined gate,
그는 그곳에서 하룻밤을 묵기로 했다. 그는 부서진 문 안으로 양들을 모두 몰아넣고 나서,
and then laid some planks across it to prevent the flock from wandering away during the night.
밤사이 양들이 밖으로 나가지 못하도록 문 앞을 널빤지로 가로막았다.
There were no wolves in the region, but once an animal had strayed during the night,
이 부근에 늑대는 없었지만, 예전에 양 한 마리가 밤중에 길을 잃는 바람에
and the boy had had to spend the entire next day searching for it.
소년이 다음 날 온종일 찾아 헤맸던 적이 있었다.
He swept the floor with his jacket and lay down, using the book he had just finished reading as a pillow.
소년은 입고 있던 겉옷으로 바닥을 쓸고는, 방금 다 읽은 책을 베개 삼아 누웠다.
He told himself that he would have to start reading thicker books: they lasted longer, and made more comfortable pillows.
그는 이제부터 좀 더 두꺼운 책을 읽어야겠다고 생각했다. 그런 책이 읽는 데 시간도 더 오래 걸릴뿐더러 베개로 쓰기에도 더 편했기 때문이다.
It was still dark when he awoke, and, looking up, he could see the stars through the half-destroyed roof.
잠에서 깼을 때 사방은 여전히 어두웠고, 고개를 들어 보니 반쯤 무너진 지붕 너머로 별들이 총총히 빛나고 있었다.
어느덧 하룻밤이 지나고 새벽이 되었습니다. 무너진 천장 사이로 보이는 별빛이 신비로운 분위기를 자아냅니다.
I wanted to sleep a little longer, he thought. He had had the same dream that night as a week ago,
‘조금만 더 자고 싶은데.’ 소년은 생각했다. 그는 일주일 전과 똑같은 꿈을 그날 밤에도 꾸었고,
and once again he had awakened before it ended. He arose and, taking up his crook, began to awaken the sheep that still slept.
이번에도 꿈이 끝나기도 전에 잠에서 깨버린 것이었다. 소년은 자리에서 일어나 지팡이를 챙겨 들고 아직 잠들어 있는 양들을 깨우기 시작했다.
