“We are part of that soul, so we rarely recognize that it is working for us.”

The boy thought about that for a while as he looked at the moon and the bleached sands.
소년은 달빛 아래 하얗게 빛나는 모래를 바라보며 잠시 그 말을 곱씹어 보았다.
“I have watched the caravan as it crossed the desert,” he said.
“저는 사막을 가로지르는 카라반의 행렬을 지켜봤어요.” 소년이 말했다.
“The caravan and the desert speak the same language, and it’s for that reason that the desert allows the crossing.”
“카라반과 사막은 같은 언어를 쓰고 있었고, 바로 그 때문에 사막이 횡단을 허락해 주는 것 같았어요.”
산티아고는 이제 관찰을 통해 만물의 소통 방식을 깨달아가고 있습니다. 사막이라는 거대한 자연과 인간의 대열이 어떻게 조화를 이루며 나아가는지를 간파한 셈이죠.
“It’s going to test the caravan’s every step to see if it’s in time, and, if it is, we will make it to the oasis.”
“사막은 카라반의 발걸음 하나하나가 만물의 흐름과 일치하는지 시험할 것이고, 만약 그렇다면 우리는 무사히 오아시스에 도착하겠죠.”
“If either of us had joined this caravan based only on personal courage, but without understanding that language,”
“만약 우리 중 누군가가 그 언어를 이해하지 못한 채 그저 개인적인 용기만 믿고 이 대열에 합류했다면,”
“this journey would have been much more difficult.” They stood there looking at the moon.
“이번 여정은 훨씬 더 고됐을 게다.” 그들은 거기 서서 달을 바라보았다.
“That’s the magic of omens,” said the boy. “I’ve seen how the guides read the signs of the desert,”
“그게 바로 징조의 마법이에요.” 소년이 말했다. “전 길잡이들이 사막의 표지들을 어떻게 읽어내는지 봐왔거든요.”
“and how the soul of the caravan speaks to the soul of the desert.”
“그리고 카라반의 영혼이 어떻게 사막의 영혼과 대화하는지도 말이에요.”
The Englishman said, “I’d better pay more attention to the caravan.”
영국인이 말했다. “나도 카라반에 좀 더 주의를 기울이는 게 좋겠구나.”
“And I’d better read your books,” said the boy. They were strange books.
“저도 아저씨의 책들을 읽어봐야겠어요.” 소년이 말했다. 그것들은 기이한 책들이었다.
