여기서 징조(omens)는 단순히 운이 좋은 우연이 아니라, 우주가 우리에게 보내는 이정표와 같은 역할을 합니다.

소년이 대답하기도 전에, 나비 한 마리가 나타나 소년과 노인 사이를 나풀거리며 날아다녔다.
He remembered something his grandfather had once told him: that butterflies were a good omen.
소년은 할아버지가 해주셨던 말씀을 떠올렸다. 나비는 좋은 징조라는 말씀 말이다.
Like crickets, and like grasshoppers; like lizards and four-leaf clovers.
귀뚜라미나 여치, 도마뱀이나 네잎클로버처럼 말이다.
“That’s right,” said the old man, able to read the boy’s thoughts. “Just as your grandfather taught you. These are good omens.”
“맞단다.” 소년의 생각을 읽기라도 한 듯 노인이 말했다. “네 할아버지가 가르쳐주신 그대로야. 이것들은 좋은 징조들이지.”
The old man opened his cape, and the boy was struck by what he saw. The old man wore a breastplate of heavy gold, covered with precious stones.
노인이 망토를 젖히자 소년은 눈앞에 펼쳐진 광경에 숨이 멎는 듯했다. 노인은 보석으로 뒤덮인 묵직한 황금 흉갑을 입고 있었다.
노인이 단순한 나그네가 아닌, 범접할 수 없는 고귀한 존재임을 시각적으로 증명하는 대목입니다.
The boy recalled the brilliance he had noticed on the previous day. He really was a king! He must be disguised to avoid encounters with thieves.
소년은 어제 보았던 그 눈부신 광채를 떠올렸다. 그는 정말로 왕이었던 것이다! 도둑들의 눈을 피하려고 변장을 하고 있었음이 틀림없었다.
“Take these,” said the old man, holding out a white stone and a black stone that had been embedded at the center of the breastplate.
“이것들을 받거라.” 노인은 흉갑 한가운데 박혀 있던 흰 보석과 검은 보석을 하나씩 꺼내 주며 말했다.
“They are called Urim and Thummim. The black signifies ‘yes,’ and the white ‘no.’
“이것들을 ‘우림’과 ‘툼밈’이라고 부른단다. 검은색은 ‘예’를, 흰색은 ‘아니오’를 뜻하지.”
우림(Urim)과 툼밈(Thummim)은 구약성경에서 제사장이 하나님의 뜻을 묻기 위해 사용했던 도구입니다. 이제 소년의 여정에 든든한 조력자가 생겼군요.
When you are unable to read the omens, they will help you to do so. Always ask an objective question.
“징조를 읽기 어려울 때 이것들이 도움이 될 게다. 항상 구체적인 질문을 던지도록 해라.”
“But, if you can, try to make your own decisions. The treasure is at the Pyramids; that you already knew.
“하지만 웬만하면 스스로 결정을 내리도록 노력하렴. 보물이 피라미드에 있다는 건 너도 이미 알고 있지 않느냐.”
