The next day, the boy met the old man at noon. He brought six sheep with him.
다음 날 정오, 소년은 노인을 만났다. 그는 양 여섯 마리를 데리고 갔다.
망설임을 끝내고 드디어 실천에 옮기는 날입니다. 노인에게 약속한 양을 실제로 데려온 것을 보니, 이제 산티아고의 위대한 여정이 본격적으로 시작되려나 봅니다.
“I’m surprised,” the boy said. “My friend bought all the other sheep immediately.
“정말 놀랐어요.” 소년이 말했다. “제 친구가 나머지 양들을 그 자리에서 다 사버렸거든요.”
He said that he had always dreamed of being a shepherd, and that it was a good omen.”
그는 예전부터 항상 양치기가 되는 게 꿈이었다면서, 이건 아주 좋은 징조라고 하더라고요.”
“That’s the way it always is,” said the old man. “It’s called the principle of favorability.
“늘 그런 법이란다.” 노인이 말했다. “그걸 ‘유리한 원칙’이라고 부르지.”
유리한 원칙(principle of favorability)은 무언가 새로운 일을 시작할 때 우주가 보내는 일종의 격려 같은 것이라 할 수 있습니다.
When you play cards the first time, you are almost sure to win. Beginner’s luck.”
“처음 카드 게임을 하면 거의 무조건 따게 되어 있거든. 바로 ‘초심자의 행운’이라는 거란다.”
“Why is that?” “Because there is a force that wants you to realize your Personal Legend; it whets your appetite with a taste of success.”
“그건 왜 그런 거죠?” “네가 자아의 신화를 실현하기를 바라는 어떤 힘이 있기 때문이지. 그 힘은 네가 성공의 맛을 미리 보게 해서 의욕을 돋우어 준단다.”
Then the old man began to inspect the sheep, and he saw that one was lame.
노인은 양들을 살피기 시작했고, 그중 한 마리가 다리를 전다는 사실을 발견했다.
The boy explained that it wasn’t important, since that sheep was the most intelligent of the flock, and produced the most wool.
소년은 그 녀석이 무리 중에서 가장 영리하고 털도 제일 많이 내놓기 때문에 별로 문제될 게 없다고 설명했다.
“Where is the treasure?” he asked. “It’s in Egypt, near the Pyramids.”
“보물은 어디에 있나요?” 소년이 물었다. “이집트의 피라미드 근처에 있단다.”
The boy was startled. The old woman had said the same thing. But she hadn’t charged him anything.
소년은 깜짝 놀랐다. 집시 노파도 똑같은 말을 했기 때문이다. 하지만 그녀는 복채를 한 푼도 받지 않았었다.
