He suggested that the boy look around the palace and return in two hours.
현자는 대신 청년에게 궁전 안을 여기저기 구경하고 두 시간 뒤에 다시 오라고 제안했지.
“‘Meanwhile, I want to ask you to do something,’ said the wise man, handing the boy a teaspoon that held two drops of oil.
“‘그러는 동안 한 가지 부탁을 하마.’ 현자는 기름 두 방울이 담긴 티스푼을 청년에게 건네며 말했어.
현자가 내준 기름 두 방울은 이 우화의 핵심 소재로, 우리가 인생에서 지켜내야 할 본질적인 가치나 책임감을 상징합니다.
‘As you wander around, carry this spoon with you without allowing the oil to spill.’

“The boy began climbing and descending the many stairways of the palace, keeping his eyes fixed on the spoon.
“청년은 스푼에서 눈을 떼지 않은 채 궁전의 수많은 계단을 오르내리기 시작했어.
After two hours, he returned to the room where the wise man was.
두 시간 뒤, 청년은 현자가 있는 방으로 돌아왔단다.
“‘Well,’ asked the wise man, ‘did you see the Persian tapestries that are hanging in my dining hall?
“‘자,’ 현자가 물었어. ‘내 식당에 걸려 있는 페르시아 양탄자들을 보았느냐?
Did you see the garden that it took the master gardener ten years to create? Did you notice the beautiful parchments in my library?’
정원사가 가꾸는 데 십 년이나 걸린 정원은 어떻더냐? 내 서재에 있는 아름다운 양피지들도 보았겠지?’
“The boy was embarrassed, and confessed that he had observed nothing.
“청년은 몹시 당황하며 아무것도 보지 못했다고 고백했단다.
His only concern had been not to spill the oil that the wise man had entrusted to him.
현자가 맡긴 기름 방울을 흘리지 않는 데에만 온 정신을 쏟았기 때문이지.
“‘Then go back and observe the marvels of my world,’ said the wise man. ‘You cannot trust a man if you don’t know his house.’
“‘그렇다면 다시 가서 내 세상의 아름다운 것들을 살펴보고 오렴.’ 현자가 말했어. ‘살고 있는 집을 모르는 사람을 어떻게 신뢰할 수 있겠느냐?’
공간을 안다는 것은 그 주인의 삶과 가치관을 이해하는 첫걸음이라는 현자의 통찰이 담겨 있습니다. 청년에게 시야를 더 넓게 가질 것을 권하고 있군요.
