마음은 그가 흘린 눈물이 떨어진 자리를 파라고 말해주었다.
As he was attempting to pull out the rocks he encountered, he heard footsteps. Several figures approached him.
소년이 앞을 가로막은 돌덩이들을 들어내려 애쓰고 있을 때, 발소리가 들려왔다. 몇몇 인영이 그에게 다가왔다.
드디어 위기의 순간입니다. 달빛을 등지고 나타난 정체 모를 무리가 소년을 위협하며 긴장감을 고조시키고 있군요.
Their backs were to the moonlight, and the boy could see neither their eyes nor their faces.
그들은 달빛을 등지고 서 있었기에, 소년은 그들의 눈도 얼굴도 분간할 수 없었다.
“What are you doing here?” one of the figures demanded. Because he was terrified, the boy didn’t answer.
“여기서 무엇을 하고 있느냐?” 그림자 중 하나가 쏘아붙였다. 너무나 겁에 질린 나머지 소년은 대답하지 못했다.
He had found where his treasure was, and was frightened at what might happen.
보물이 묻힌 곳을 막 찾아냈는데, 이제 무슨 일이 벌어질지 몰라 두려울 뿐이었다.
“We’re refugees from the tribal wars, and we need money,” the other figure said. “What are you hiding there?”
“우리는 부족 전쟁을 피해 도망쳐온 피난민이라 돈이 필요하다.” 다른 남자가 말했다. “거기에 무엇을 숨기고 있는 거냐?”
“I’m not hiding anything,” the boy answered. But one of them seized the boy and yanked him back out of the hole.
“아무것도 숨기지 않았어요.” 소년이 대답했다. 하지만 그들 중 하나가 소년을 잡아채 구덩이 밖으로 거칠게 끌어냈다.
Another, who was searching the boy’s bags, found the piece of gold. “There’s gold here,” he said.
소년의 가방을 뒤지던 또 다른 남자가 금 조각을 발견했다. “여기 금이 있습니다.” 그가 말했다.
The moon shone on the face of the Arab who had seized him, and in the man’s eyes the boy saw death.
달빛이 소년을 붙잡은 아랍 남자의 얼굴을 비추었다. 소년은 그의 눈에서 죽음의 그림자를 보았다.
“He’s probably got more gold hidden in the ground.” They made the boy continue digging, but he found nothing.
“땅속에 금을 더 숨겨두었을 게 뻔하다.” 그들은 소년에게 계속 땅을 파라고 시켰지만, 아무것도 나오지 않았다.
As the sun rose, the men began to beat the boy.
해가 떠오르자 남자들은 소년을 때리기 시작했다.
He was bruised and bleeding, his clothing was torn to shreds, and he felt that death was near.
온몸은 멍들고 피투성이가 되었으며 옷은 갈갈이 찢어졌다. 소년은 죽음이 가까워졌음을 느꼈다.
