사막에 머무는 동안 그는 이집트에서 쇠똥구리가 하나님의 상징이라는 것을 배웠었다.
쇠똥구리(scarab beetle)는 고대 이집트에서 태양신 라(Ra)의 화신이자 부활과 영생을 상징하는 신성한 존재로 여겨졌습니다. 소년이 눈물을 흘린 자리에 이 곤충이 나타난 것은 아주 강력하고 긍정적인 징조라고 볼 수 있습니다.
Another omen! The boy began to dig into the dune.
또 다른 징조였다! 소년은 모래 언덕을 파기 시작했다.

누구나 자기 집 뒷마당에 피라미드를 쌓을 수 있다는 말이었다.
크리스털 상인이 언급했던 뒷마당의 피라미드는 맹목적인 모방이나 외형적인 흉내를 의미합니다. 진짜 피라미드를 마주한 소년은 그 거대함과 유구한 세월의 무게를 실감하게 되죠.
