“The man looked at the angel in surprise. “‘Your son went to serve at a distant place, and became a centurion.
“남자는 깜짝 놀라 천사를 바라보았어. ‘그대의 아들은 먼 변방으로 가서 백부장이 되었느니라.
백부장(centurion)은 고대 로마 군대에서 약 100명의 병사를 지휘하던 중급 간부를 의미합니다.
He was just and good. One afternoon, one of his servants fell ill, and it appeared that he would die.
그는 의롭고 선한 사람이었지. 어느 날 오후, 그의 하인 중 한 명이 병이 들어 죽을 지경에 이르렀단다.
Your son had heard of a rabbi who was able to cure illnesses,
그대 아들은 병을 고칠 수 있는 어떤 랍비에 대한 소문을 들었지.
여기서 랍비(rabbi)는 유대교의 율법 교사를 뜻하지만, 문맥상 당시 유대 땅에서 활동하던 예수 그리스도를 지칭합니다.
and he rode out for days and days in search of this man.
그래서 그분을 찾아 며칠 밤낮을 쉬지 않고 말을 달렸단다.
Along the way, he learned that the man he was seeking was the Son of God.
길을 가는 동안, 그는 자신이 찾고 있는 그분이 바로 하나님의 아들이라는 사실을 알게 되었어.
He met others who had been cured by him, and they instructed your son in the man’s teachings.
그는 그분에게 치유받은 다른 사람들을 만났고, 그들로부터 그분의 가르침을 배웠지.
And so, despite the fact that he was a Roman centurion, he converted to their faith.
그리하여 로마의 백부장이었음에도 불구하고, 아들은 그들의 신앙으로 개종했노라.
Shortly thereafter, he reached the place where the man he was looking for was visiting.’
그리고 얼마 지나지 않아, 그는 자신이 찾던 분이 머물고 계신 곳에 도착했단다.’
“‘He told the man that one of his servants was gravely ill, and the rabbi made ready to go to his house with him.
“‘아들은 그분에게 자신의 하인 중 하나가 위독하다고 말했고, 랍비는 그와 함께 집으로 갈 채비를 하셨느니라.
But the centurion was a man of faith, and, looking into the eyes of the rabbi,
하지만 백부장은 믿음이 깊은 사람이었기에, 랍비의 눈을 들여다보는 순간,
he knew that he was surely in the presence of the Son of God.’
자신이 진정 하나님의 아들 앞에 서 있음을 깨달았느니라.’
“‘And this is what your son said,’ the angel told the man.
“‘그리고 이것이 그대의 아들이 한 말이니라,’ 천사가 남자에게 말했단다.
