Lead will play its role until the world has no further need for lead; and then lead will have to turn itself into gold.
“납은 세상에 더 이상 납이 필요하지 않을 때까지 자신의 역할을 다할 거예요. 그러고 나면 납은 스스로를 황금으로 변화시켜야 합니다.”
“That’s what alchemists do. They show that, when we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better, too.”
“그것이 연금술사들이 하는 일이에요. 우리가 지금보다 더 나아지기 위해 노력할 때, 우리 주변의 모든 것들도 함께 더 나아진다는 사실을 그들은 보여주고 있답니다.”

“Well, why did you say that I don’t know about love?” the sun asked the boy.
“그런데 넌 왜 내가 사랑을 모른다고 말한 것이냐?” 태양이 소년에게 물었다.
“Because it’s not love to be static like the desert, nor is it love to roam the world like the wind.
“사막처럼 그저 가만히 머물러 있는 것은 사랑이 아니니까요. 바람처럼 세상을 떠돌기만 하는 것도 사랑이 아니고요.”
And it’s not love to see everything from a distance, like you do. Love is the force that transforms and improves the Soul of the World.
“당신처럼 만물을 멀리서 지켜보기만 하는 것 또한 사랑이 아니에요. 사랑은 ‘세상의 영혼’을 변화시키고 향상시키는 힘입니다.”
When I first reached through to it, I thought the Soul of the World was perfect.
“처음 ‘세상의 영혼’에 닿았을 때, 저는 그것이 완벽하다고 생각했어요.”
But later, I could see that it was like other aspects of creation, and had its own passions and wars.
“하지만 나중에 알게 되었죠. 그것 또한 다른 피조물들과 마찬가지로 열정과 갈등을 품고 있다는 사실을요.”
It is we who nourish the Soul of the World, and the world we live in will be either better or worse, depending on whether we become better or worse.
“‘세상의 영혼’을 살찌우는 건 바로 우리예요. 우리가 더 나은 사람이 되느냐 아니냐에 따라 우리가 사는 세상도 더 좋아지거나 혹은 나빠지는 것이죠.”
And that’s where the power of love comes in. Because when we love, we always strive to become better than we are.”

“So what do you want of me?” the sun asked. “I want you to help me turn myself into the wind,” the boy answered.
“그럼 내가 네게 무엇을 해주길 원하느냐?” 태양이 물었다. “제가 바람으로 변할 수 있도록 도와주세요.” 소년이 대답했다.
“Nature knows me as the wisest being in creation,” the sun said. “But I don’t know how to turn you into the wind.”
“대자연은 나를 만물 중 가장 지혜로운 존재로 알고 있지.” 태양이 말했다. “하지만 너를 바람으로 바꾸는 방법은 나도 모른단다.”
