“This desert was once a sea,” he said. “I noticed that,” the boy answered.
“이 사막은 한때 바다였단다.” 그가 말했다. “저도 그걸 느꼈어요.” 소년이 대답했다.
The alchemist told the boy to place the shell over his ear. He had done that many times when he was a child, and had heard the sound of the sea.
연금술사는 소년에게 조개껍데기를 귀에 대보라고 했다. 소년은 어릴 적에도 여러 번 그렇게 해본 적이 있었고, 그때마다 바다의 소리를 들었었다.
“The sea has lived on in this shell, because that’s its Personal Legend.
“바다는 이 조개껍데기 속에서 계속 살아 숨 쉬고 있어. 그것이 이 조개의 자아의 신화이기 때문이지.”
And it will never cease doing so until the desert is once again covered by water.”
“사막이 다시 물로 덮일 때까지 조개는 결코 그 일을 멈추지 않을 게다.”
They mounted their horses, and rode out in the direction of the Pyramids of Egypt.
그들은 다시 말에 올라타 이집트의 피라미드가 있는 방향을 향해 달렸다.
THE SUN WAS SETTING WHEN THE BOY’S HEART SOUNDED a danger signal.
태양이 저물어갈 무렵, 소년의 마음이 위험 신호를 보내왔다.
소년의 영적 감각이 외부의 물리적인 위협을 직감하며 긴장감이 고조되는 순간입니다.
They were surrounded by gigantic dunes, and the boy looked at the alchemist to see whether he had sensed anything.
두 사람은 거대한 모래 언덕들에 둘러싸여 있었다. 소년은 연금술사가 무언가 기척을 느꼈는지 살피기 위해 그를 바라보았다.
But he appeared to be unaware of any danger. Five minutes later, the boy saw two horsemen waiting ahead of them.
하지만 그는 어떤 위험도 알아채지 못한 듯 보였다. 오 분쯤 지났을까, 소년은 앞쪽에서 기다리고 있는 두 명의 기마병을 발견했다.
Before he could say anything to the alchemist, the two horsemen had become ten, and then a hundred.
그가 연금술사에게 무어라 말을 하기도 전에 두 명이었던 기마병은 열 명이 되었고, 순식간에 백 명으로 불어났다.
And then they were everywhere in the dunes. They were tribesmen dressed in blue, with black rings surrounding their turbans.
그러더니 모래 언덕 사방에서 전사들이 나타났다. 그들은 푸른 옷을 입고 터번에 검은 고리를 두른 부족 전사들이었다.
푸른 옷을 입은 전사들은 사막의 유목민인 투아레그족을 연상시킵니다. 그들의 강인하고 위엄 있는 모습이 묘사되고 있군요.
Their faces were hidden behind blue veils, with only their eyes showing.
얼굴은 푸른 베일로 가려져 있었고 오직 두 눈만이 드러나 있었다.
Even from a distance, their eyes conveyed the strength of their souls. And their eyes spoke of death.
멀리서도 그들의 눈빛에는 영혼의 강인함이 서려 있었다. 그리고 그 눈은 죽음을 말하고 있었다.
