Don’t ask me why; I don’t know why. I just know that the Tradition is always right.

“Men have never understood the words of the wise. So gold, instead of being seen as a symbol of evolution, became the basis for conflict.”
“사람들은 현자들의 말을 결코 이해하지 못했어. 그리하여 황금은 진화의 상징이 되는 대신 분쟁의 불씨가 되어버린 게지.”
진화의 상징이어야 할 황금이 인간의 탐욕과 만나 분쟁의 도구로 전락해버린 세태를 비판하고 있습니다.
“There are many languages spoken by things,” the boy said. “There was a time when, for me, a camel’s whinnying was nothing more than whinnying.
“만물은 저마다의 언어로 말을 하는군요.” 소년이 말했다. “제게 낙타의 울음소리가 그저 울음소리에 불과했던 적이 있었어요.”
Then it became a signal of danger. And, finally, it became just a whinny again.”
“그러다 위험을 알리는 신호가 되었고, 마침내 다시 그저 울음소리가 되었죠.”
But then he stopped. The alchemist probably already knew all that.
말을 하던 소년은 멈췄다. 연금술사라면 이미 다 알고 있을 내용이었기 때문이다.
“I have known true alchemists,” the alchemist continued. “They locked themselves in their laboratories, and tried to evolve, as gold had.
“나는 진짜 연금술사들을 알고 있단다.” 연금술사가 말을 이었다. “그들은 실험실에 틀박혀 황금이 그러했듯 스스로 진화하려 애썼지.”
And they found the Philosopher’s Stone, because they understood that when something evolves, everything around that thing evolves as well.
그들은 철학자의 돌을 찾아냈지. 무언가가 진화할 때, 그 주변의 모든 것들 역시 함께 진화한다는 사실을 이해했기 때문이란다.
“Others stumbled upon the stone by accident. They already had the gift, and their souls were readier for such things than the souls of others.
“우연히 돌을 발견한 이들도 있어. 그들은 이미 천부적인 재능을 타고났고, 그들의 영혼은 다른 이들보다 그런 경지에 더 가까이 가 있었지.”
But they don’t count. They’re quite rare. “And then there were the others, who were interested only in gold.
“하지만 그런 이들은 예외로 쳐야 해. 아주 드문 경우니까. 그리고 오직 황금에만 관심이 있었던 다른 이들도 있었단다.”
They never found the secret. They forgot that lead, copper, and iron have their own Personal Legends to fulfill.
“그들은 끝내 비밀을 찾아내지 못했어. 납이나 구리, 철에게도 저마다 실현해야 할 ‘자아의 신화’가 있다는 사실을 잊어버린 게지.”
자아의 신화는 인간뿐 아니라 광물 같은 무생물에게도 존재하는 우주적 소명임을 설명하고 있습니다.
And anyone who interferes with the Personal Legend of another thing never will discover his own.”
“다른 존재의 자아의 신화에 간섭하는 자는 자신의 신화 또한 결코 발견하지 못하는 법이란다.”
자신의 길을 걷기 위해서는 타인의 삶과 운명을 존중하는 자세가 필수적임을 강조하는 대목입니다.
The alchemist’s words echoed out like a curse. He reached over and picked up a shell from the ground.
