The future belongs to God, and it is only he who reveals it, under extraordinary circumstances.
“미래는 하나님의 것이며, 오직 그분만이 특별한 상황에서 미래를 드러내 주신단다.”
How do I guess at the future? Based on the omens of the present.
“내가 어떻게 미래를 짐작하느냐고? 바로 현재의 징조들을 바탕으로 하는 거지.”
The secret is here in the present. If you pay attention to the present, you can improve upon it.
“비밀은 바로 여기, 현재에 있단다. 현재에 주의를 기울이면 현재를 더 낫게 고칠 수 있어.”
오직 현재에 집중하라는 점술가의 조언은 앞서 낙타 몰이꾼이 소년에게 해주었던 말과도 일맥상통합니다. 비밀은 현재에 있다는 이 깨달음은 소설 전체를 관통하는 핵심 메시지이기도 합니다.

The camel driver had asked what the circumstances were under which God would allow him to see the future.
낙타 몰이꾼은 어떤 상황에서 하나님이 미래를 보게 해주시는지 물었다.
“Only when he, himself, reveals it. And God only rarely reveals the future.
“오직 그분이 직접 보여주실 때뿐이지. 사실 하나님은 아주 드물게만 미래를 드러내신단다.”
When he does so, it is for only one reason: it’s a future that was written so as to be altered.”
“그분이 그렇게 하시는 데는 오직 한 가지 이유뿐이야. 그것은 바로 바뀌어야 하기에 기록된 미래일 때란다.”
바뀌기 위해 기록된 미래라는 표현은 참으로 절묘합니다. 모든 것이 정해져 있다는 마크툽의 운명론 속에서도, 인간의 노력과 징조에 대한 반응이 미래를 바꿀 수 있다는 희망적인 여지를 남겨주는군요.

Why was it that he wanted the boy to serve as his instrument?

“Go and speak to the tribal chieftains,” said the camel driver. “Tell them about the armies that are approaching.”
“부족장들에게 가서 말해봐.” 낙타 몰이꾼이 말했다. “적군이 오고 있다고 전하란 말이야.”
