The desert was full of men who earned their living based on the ease with which they could penetrate to the Soul of the World.
사막에는 ‘세상의 영혼’에 얼마나 쉽게 도달하느냐를 생계 수단으로 삼는 사람들로 가득했다.
They were known as seers, and they were held in fear by women and the elderly.
그들은 점술가로 불렸으며, 여인들과 노인들에게는 두려움의 대상이었다.
Tribesmen were also wary of consulting them, because it would be impossible to be effective in battle if one knew that he was fated to die.
부족의 전사들 또한 그들에게 조언을 구하는 것을 경계했다. 만약 자신이 죽을 운명이라는 것을 미리 안다면 전장에서 제대로 싸울 수 없기 때문이었다.
The tribesmen preferred the taste of battle, and the thrill of not knowing what the outcome would be;
그들은 전투의 전율과 결과를 알 수 없는 긴장감을 더 선호했다.
the future was already written by Allah, and what he had written was always for the good of man.
미래는 이미 알라에 의해 기록되어 있었고, 그분이 기록하신 것은 언제나 인간에게 선한 것이었다.
So the tribesmen lived only for the present, because the present was full of surprises,
그래서 전사들은 오직 현재만을 위해 살았다. 현재는 늘 놀라움으로 가득했기 때문이다.
낙타 몰이꾼이 말했던 현재의 가치를 전사들의 관점에서 다시 설명하고 있습니다. 죽음이 늘 곁에 있는 전장에서 현재는 가장 치열하고 생생한 순간이겠죠.
and they had to be aware of many things: Where was the enemy’s sword?
그들은 늘 많은 것을 경계해야 했다. 적의 칼날은 어디에 있는가?
Where was his horse? What kind of blow should one deliver next in order to remain alive?
적의 말은 어디쯤 와 있는가? 살아남으려면 다음에 어떤 일격을 날려야 하는가?
The camel driver was not a fighter, and he had consulted with seers.
낙타 몰이꾼은 전사가 아니었기에 점술가들을 찾아가 본 적이 있었다.
Many of them had been right about what they said, while some had been wrong.
그들의 예언 중 상당수는 적중했지만, 틀린 적도 있었다.
Then, one day, the oldest seer he had ever sought out (and the one most to be feared) had asked why the camel driver was so interested in the future.
그러던 어느 날, 소년이 만났던 점술가들 중 가장 나이가 많고 또 가장 두려운 존재로 손꼽히는 노인이 낙타 몰이꾼에게 왜 그토록 미래를 알고 싶어 하는지 물었다.
“Well…so I can do things,” he had responded. “And so I can change those things that I don’t want to happen.”
“글쎄요... 그래야 무언가 행동을 할 수 있으니까요.” 몰이꾼이 대답했다. “그리고 일어나지 않았으면 하는 일들을 바꿀 수도 있고요.”
