“Always heed the omens,” the old king had said. The boy recalled what he had seen in the vision, and sensed that it was actually going to occur.

He rose, and made his way back toward the palm trees. Once again, he perceived the many languages in the things about him:

The camel driver was seated at the base of a palm tree, observing the sunset.
낙타 몰이꾼은 야자나무 밑동에 앉아 저무는 해를 지켜보고 있었다.
He saw the boy appear from the other side of the dunes. “An army is coming,” the boy said. “I had a vision.”
그는 모래 언덕 너머에서 소년이 나타나는 것을 보았다. “군대가 오고 있어요.” 소년이 말했다. “환영을 봤거든요.”
“The desert fills men’s hearts with visions,” the camel driver answered.
“사막은 사람들의 마음을 환영으로 가득 채우기도 하지.” 낙타 몰이꾼이 대답했다.
But the boy told him about the hawks: that he had been watching their flight and had suddenly felt himself to have plunged to the Soul of the World.
하지만 소년은 매들에 대해 이야기했다. 매들의 비행을 지켜보다가 갑자기 ‘세상의 영혼’ 속으로 깊이 빠져드는 기분을 느꼈노라고 말이다.
The camel driver understood what the boy was saying. He knew that any given thing on the face of the earth could reveal the history of all things.
몰이꾼은 소년의 말을 이해했다. 그는 지상의 그 어떤 사소한 것이라도 만물의 역사를 드러낼 수 있다는 사실을 알고 있었다.
하나의 모래알이나 새의 비행 속에 우주 전체의 진리가 담겨 있다는 이 책의 일관된 철학, 즉 부분 안에 전체가 있다는 통찰을 다시 한번 강조하고 있습니다.
One could open a book to any page, or look at a person’s hand; one could turn a card, or watch the flight of the birds…

Actually, it wasn’t that those things, in themselves, revealed anything at all;

it was just that people, looking at what was occurring around them, could find a means of penetration to the Soul of the World.
단지 사람들이 주변에서 일어나는 일들을 바라봄으로써 ‘세상의 영혼’을 꿰뚫어 볼 수 있는 방편을 찾는 것뿐이었다.
