부족 전쟁이 길어지는 이유를 종교적인 관점에서 설명하는 대목입니다. 양쪽 모두 같은 신을 섬기기에 어느 한쪽의 일방적인 승리가 쉽지 않음을 암시하죠.
The people went back to where they were living, and the boy went to meet with Fatima that afternoon.

앞서 영국인과 소년이 나누었던 대화의 핵심 키워드들이 다시 등장합니다. 파티마 역시 소년과의 만남을 통해 그 신비로운 언어들을 공유하게 되었군요.
Because of that, I have become a part of you.” The boy listened to the sound of her voice,

I have forgotten about my past, about my traditions, and the way in which men of the desert expect women to behave.
“나의 과거도, 전통도, 그리고 사막의 남자들이 여자에게 바라는 행동 방식도 이제는 모두 잊어버렸어요.”
Ever since I was a child, I have dreamed that the desert would bring me a wonderful present.
“어린 시절부터 사막이 내게 아주 멋진 선물을 가져다줄 거라는 꿈을 꾸어왔죠.”
Now, my present has arrived, and it’s you.” The boy wanted to take her hand.
“이제 나의 선물이 도착했어요. 그건 바로 당신이에요.” 소년은 그녀의 손을 잡고 싶었다.
But Fatima’s hands held to the handles of her jug. “You have told me about your dreams, about the old king and your treasure.
하지만 파티마는 물동이 손잡이를 꽉 잡은 채 손을 내어주지 않았다. “당신은 내게 당신의 꿈과 늙은 왕, 그리고 당신의 보물에 대해 이야기해주었죠.”
