“Maybe this is an omen,” said the Englishman, half aloud. “Who told you about omens?”
“어쩌면 이것도 하나의 징조일지 모르겠군.” 영국인이 혼잣말처럼 중얼거렸다. “징조에 대해서는 누구한테 들으셨어요?”
The boy’s interest was increasing by the moment. “Everything in life is an omen,” said the Englishman, now closing the journal he was reading.
소년의 호기심은 시시각각 커져만 갔다. “인생의 모든 것은 징조란다.” 읽고 있던 잡지를 덮으며 영국인이 말했다.
“There is a universal language, understood by everybody, but already forgotten.”
“누구나 이해할 수 있지만, 사람들에게 이미 잊힌 ‘우주의 언어’라는 게 존재하지.”
우주의 언어(Universal Language)는 이 작품의 핵심 철학 중 하나입니다. 인간의 언어를 초월하여 만물과 소통하는 근원적인 방식을 뜻하죠.
“I am in search of that universal language, among other things. That’s why I’m here.”
“무엇보다 나는 그 언어를 찾고 있어. 그게 내가 여기 있는 이유란다.”
“I have to find a man who knows that universal language. An alchemist.”
“그 우주의 언어를 아는 사람을 찾아야 해. 바로 연금술사 말이야.”
The conversation was interrupted by the warehouse boss. “You’re in luck, you two,” the fat Arab said.
창고 책임자가 나타나 대화를 가로막았다. “자네들 운이 좋군.” 뚱뚱한 아랍인이 말했다.
“There’s a caravan leaving today for Al-Fayoum.” “But I’m going to Egypt,” the boy said.
“오늘 알 파윰으로 떠나는 카라반이 있어.” “전 이집트에 가는데요.” 소년이 대답했다.
“Al-Fayoum is in Egypt,” said the Arab. “What kind of Arab are you?”
“알 파윰이 바로 이집트야.” 아랍인이 말했다. “자네는 도대체 어느 나라 아랍인인가?”
소년의 엉뚱한 대답에 창고 책임자가 황당해하는 유머러스한 장면입니다. 알 파윰은 실제로 이집트 카이로 남서쪽에 위치한 거대한 오아시스 지대입니다.
“That’s a good luck omen,” the Englishman said, after the fat Arab had gone out.
“그것참 좋은 징조로군.” 뚱뚱한 아랍인이 나간 뒤 영국인이 말했다.
“If I could, I’d write a huge encyclopedia just about the words luck and coincidence.”
“할 수만 있다면 ‘운’과 ‘우연’이라는 단어에 대해서만 방대한 백과사전을 쓰고 싶을 정도야.”
“It’s with those words that the universal language is written.”
“그 단어들이 바로 우주의 언어를 기록하는 도구거든.”
He told the boy it was no coincidence that he had met him with Urim and Thummim in his hand.
그는 손에 우림과 툼밈을 쥐고 있는 소년을 만난 것이 결코 우연이 아니라고 말했다.
