“You’ve never had dreams of travel,” said the boy, turning to wait on a customer who had entered the shop.
“아저씨는 여행을 꿈꿔본 적이 없으시군요.” 가게로 들어오는 손님을 맞이하기 위해 몸을 돌리며 소년이 말했다.
Two days later, the merchant spoke to the boy about the display.
이틀 뒤, 상인은 진열장 문제로 소년에게 말을 건넸다.
“I don’t much like change,” he said. “You and I aren’t like Hassan, that rich merchant.
“나는 변화를 그리 좋아하지 않는단다.” 그가 말했다. “너나 나는 저 부자 상인 하산 같은 사람이 아니잖니.”
If he makes a buying mistake, it doesn’t affect him much. But we two have to live with our mistakes.”
“저 사람은 구매 결정을 한 번 잘못해도 큰 타격이 없지만, 우리 같은 사람들은 자신의 실수와 더불어 살아가야만 한단다.”
That’s true enough, the boy thought, ruefully. “Why did you think we should have the display?”
‘그건 맞는 말씀이네요.’ 소년은 씁쓸하게 생각했다. “그런데 왜 진열장을 만들어야 한다고 생각하셨나요?”
“I want to get back to my sheep faster. We have to take advantage when luck is on our side, and do as much to help it as it’s doing to help us.
“양들에게 더 빨리 돌아가고 싶거든요. 행운이 우리 편일 때 그것을 이용해야 해요. 행운이 우리를 돕는 만큼 우리도 최선을 다해 행운에 응답해야 하니까요.”
It’s called the principle of favorability. Or beginner’s luck.”
“그걸 유리한 원칙이라고 부르죠. 혹은 초심자의 행운이라고요.”
The merchant was silent for a few moments. Then he said, “The Prophet gave us the Koran,
상인은 잠시 침묵을 지켰다. 그러더니 입을 뗐다. “예언자께서는 우리에게 코란을 주셨고,”
여기서 예언자는 이슬람교의 창시자인 무함마드를, 코란은 이슬람의 경전을 의미합니다. 상인이 자신의 신앙과 가치관을 소년에게 털어놓기 시작하는군요.
and left us just five obligations to satisfy during our lives. The most important is to believe only in the one true God.
“우리가 평생 지켜야 할 다섯 가지 의무를 남기셨단다. 그중 가장 중요한 것은 오직 유일하신 참된 하느님을 믿는 것이지.”
The others are to pray five times a day, fast during Ramadan, and be charitable to the poor.”
“나머지는 하루에 다섯 번 기도하고, 라마단 기간에 금식하며, 가난한 이들에게 자선을 베푸는 것이란다.”
무슬림이 지켜야 할 다섯 가지 실천 덕목 중 네 가지를 설명하고 있습니다. 종교가 상인의 삶에서 아주 중요한 기준이 되고 있음을 알 수 있습니다.
He stopped there. His eyes filled with tears as he spoke of the Prophet.
상인은 거기서 말을 멈췄다. 예언자에 관해 이야기하는 그의 눈에 눈물이 고였다.
He was a devout man, and, even with all his impatience, he wanted to live his life in accordance with Muslim law.
그는 독실한 신자였다. 성미가 급하긴 했어도 평생을 이슬람 율법에 따라 살고자 노력하는 사람이었다.
