He had been to the village only once, the year before. The merchant was the proprietor of a dry goods shop,

상인은 속지 않기 위해 항상 자기가 보는 앞에서 양털을 깎으라고 요구했다.
A friend had told the boy about the shop, and he had taken his sheep there.
친구가 소년에게 그 가게에 대해 이야기해 주었고, 소년은 양 떼를 몰고 그곳으로 찾아갔다.
“I NEED TO SELL SOME WOOL,” THE BOY TOLD THE merchant. The shop was busy,
“양털을 좀 팔고 싶습니다.” 소년이 상인에게 말했다. 가게 안은 손님들로 북적였다.
and the man asked the shepherd to wait until the afternoon. So the boy sat on the steps of the shop and took a book from his bag.
상인은 소년에게 오후까지 기다려 달라고 했다. 그래서 소년은 가게 앞 계단에 앉아 가방에서 책 한 권을 꺼냈다.
“I didn’t know shepherds knew how to read,” said a girl’s voice behind him.
“양치기가 글을 읽을 줄 아는지는 몰랐어.” 등 뒤에서 소녀의 목소리가 들렸다.
상인의 딸이 처음으로 등장합니다. 산티아고의 마음을 단숨에 사로잡게 될 인물이죠.
The girl was typical of the region of Andalusia, with flowing black hair, and eyes that vaguely recalled the Moorish conquerors.
소녀는 검은 생머리에 무어인 정복자들을 어렴풋이 떠올리게 하는 눈매를 지닌, 전형적인 안달루시아 지방의 모습이었다.
여기서 무어인(Moorish)은 8세기경 북아프리카에서 이베리아 반도로 건너와 스페인을 지배했던 이슬람 세력을 뜻합니다. 이들의 영향으로 안달루시아 지방에는 이국적인 외모나 문화적 흔적이 많이 남아 있기도 하죠.
“Well, usually I learn more from my sheep than from books,” he answered.
“글쎄, 평소에는 책보다는 양들에게서 더 많은 걸 배워.” 그가 대답했다.
During the two hours that they talked, she told him she was the merchant’s daughter,
