Most people see the world as a threatening place, and, because they do, the world turns out, indeed, to be a threatening place.
“대부분의 사람은 세상을 위협적인 곳으로 보곤 하지. 그리고 그렇게 믿기 때문에 세상은 정말로 위협적인 곳이 되어버리는 거란다.”
세상을 바라보는 우리의 시선이 곧 우리의 현실을 결정한다는 통찰이 담겨 있습니다.
“So, we, their hearts, speak more and more softly. We never stop speaking out,
“그래서 우리 마음들은 점점 더 목소리를 낮추게 되는 거야. 말을 멈추지는 않지만,”
but we begin to hope that our words won’t be heard: we don’t want people to suffer because they don’t follow their hearts.”
“우리의 말이 들리지 않기를 바라기 시작하지. 사람들이 마음의 소리를 따르지 않아 겪게 될 고통을 지켜보고 싶지 않거든.”
“Why don’t people’s hearts tell them to continue to follow their dreams?” the boy asked the alchemist.
“왜 사람들의 마음은 계속해서 꿈을 쫓으라고 말해주지 않는 걸까요?” 소년이 연금술사에게 물었다.
“Because that’s what makes a heart suffer most, and hearts don’t like to suffer.”
“그것이 마음을 가장 고통스럽게 하는 일이기 때문이지. 그리고 마음은 고통받는 걸 좋아하지 않는단다.”
From then on, the boy understood his heart. He asked it, please, never to stop speaking to him.
그때부터 소년은 자신의 마음을 이해하게 되었다. 소년은 마음에게 제발 자신에게 말하는 것을 멈추지 말아 달라고 부탁했다.
He asked that, when he wandered far from his dreams, his heart press him and sound the alarm.
자신이 꿈에서 멀어져 방황할 때면, 마음이 자신을 다그치고 경고의 종을 울려 달라고 간청했다.
The boy swore that, every time he heard the alarm, he would heed its message.
소년은 그 경고 소리를 들을 때마다 반드시 그 메시지에 귀를 기울이겠노라고 맹세했다.
That night, he told all of this to the alchemist. And the alchemist understood that the boy’s heart had returned to the Soul of the World.
그날 밤 소년은 이 모든 이야기를 연금술사에게 털어놓았다. 연금술사는 소년의 마음이 ‘세상의 영혼’으로 돌아갔음을 깨달았다.
“So what should I do now?” the boy asked. “Continue in the direction of the Pyramids,” said the alchemist.
“그럼 이제 저는 무엇을 해야 하죠?” 소년이 물었다. “계속해서 피라미드 방향으로 나아가거라.” 연금술사가 말했다.
“And continue to pay heed to the omens. Your heart is still capable of showing you where the treasure is.”
“그리고 계속해서 징조에 주의를 기울이렴. 네 마음은 여전히 보물이 어디에 있는지 네게 보여줄 수 있으니까.”
“Is that the one thing I still needed to know?” “No,” the alchemist answered.
“이것이 제가 아직 더 알아야 했던 그 한 가지인가요?” “아니.” 연금술사가 대답했다.
