“The child went on playing with my sheep for quite a while,” continued the boy, a bit upset.
“아이는 한참 동안 양들과 놀았어요.” 소년이 약간 불쾌한 기색으로 말을 이었다.
“And suddenly, the child took me by both hands and transported me to the Egyptian pyramids.”
“그러더니 갑자기 제 두 손을 잡고 저를 이집트의 피라미드로 데려갔어요.”
당시 스페인의 평범한 양치기에게 이집트의 피라미드는 현실에 존재하지 않는 전설 속의 장소처럼 멀게 느껴지는 곳이었습니다. 소년의 꿈이 예사롭지 않음을 암시하는 대목이기도 하죠.
He paused for a moment to see if the woman knew what the Egyptian pyramids were. But she said nothing.
소년은 여자가 이집트의 피라미드가 무엇인지 알고 있는지 확인하려는 듯 잠시 말을 멈췄다. 하지만 그녀는 아무 말도 하지 않았다.
“Then, at the Egyptian pyramids,”—he said the last three words slowly, so that the old woman would understand—
“그리고 이집트의 피라미드에서,” —소년은 노파가 알아들을 수 있도록 마지막 세 단어를 천천히 말했다—
“the child said to me, ‘If you come here, you will find a hidden treasure.’
“아이가 제게 말했어요. ‘이곳에 오면 숨겨진 보물을 찾게 될 거야’라고요.”
마침내 산티아고를 머나먼 여정으로 이끌게 될 결정적인 한마디, 숨겨진 보물에 대한 이야기가 나왔습니다.
And, just as she was about to show me the exact location, I woke up. Both times.”
“그리고 아이가 정확한 위치를 가르쳐주려던 참에 잠에서 깨버렸어요. 두 번 다요.”
The woman was silent for some time. Then she again took his hands and studied them carefully.
여자는 한동안 말이 없었다. 그러더니 다시 소년의 손을 잡고 찬찬히 살펴보았다.
“I’m not going to charge you anything now,” she said. “But I want one-tenth of the treasure, if you find it.”
“지금은 복채를 한 푼도 받지 않겠어.” 그녀가 말했다. “하지만 보물을 찾게 된다면 그중 십분의 일을 내게 주어야 해.”
지금 당장 복채를 내지 않아도 된다는 제안은, 주머니 사정이 가벼운 소년에게는 거절하기 힘든 아주 매력적인 조건이었을 겁니다.
The boy laughed—out of happiness. He was going to be able to save the little money he had because of a dream about hidden treasure!
소년은 기뻐서 웃음을 터뜨렸다. 숨겨진 보물에 대한 꿈 덕분에 얼마 안 되는 돈을 아낄 수 있게 된 것이다!
“Well, interpret the dream,” he said. “First, swear to me. Swear that you will give me one-tenth of your treasure
“그럼 꿈을 해석해 주세요.” 그가 말했다. “먼저 나에게 맹세해. 보물을 찾게 된다면 그중 십분의 일을 주겠다고”
