If it were, he would already have heard of it. “And what do you do in Salem?” he insisted.

“What do I do in Salem?” The old man laughed. “Well, I’m the king of Salem!”
“내가 살렘에서 무슨 일을 하느냐고?” 노인이 껄껄 웃었다. “글쎄, 나는 살렘의 왕이란다!”
살렘의 왕이라는 선언은 이 노인이 단순한 나그네가 아님을 보여주는 강력한 대목입니다. 구약성경에서 살렘은 평화의 도시를, 그곳의 왕은 지혜로운 중재자를 상징하기도 하죠.
People say strange things, the boy thought. Sometimes it’s better to be with the sheep, who don’t say anything.
‘사람들은 참 이상한 말을 해.’ 소년은 생각했다. 가끔은 아무 말도 하지 않는 양들과 함께 지내는 편이 더 나았다.
And better still to be alone with one’s books. They tell their incredible stories at the time when you want to hear them.
책과 단둘이 있는 편이 더 나을 때도 있었다. 책은 소년이 듣고 싶어 하는 순간에만 놀라운 이야기를 들려주기 때문이다.

But when you’re talking to people, they say some things that are so strange that you don’t know how to continue the conversation.
하지만 사람들과 이야기를 하다 보면, 대화를 어떻게 이어가야 할지 알 수 없을 만큼 황당한 소리를 듣게 될 때가 있었다.
“My name is Melchizedek,” said the old man. “How many sheep do you have?”
“내 이름은 멜키세덱이란다.” 노인이 말했다. “양은 몇 마리나 가지고 있느냐?”
멜키세덱(Melchizedek)이라는 이름이 밝혀지며 그의 신비로움이 정점에 달합니다. 성경 속 인물을 모티브로 한 그의 등장은 이 이야기가 단순한 우화를 넘어 신화적인 층위로 확장됨을 예고하죠.
“Enough,” said the boy. He could see that the old man wanted to know more about his life.
“충분히 있어요.” 소년이 대답했다. 노인이 자신의 삶에 대해 더 알고 싶어 한다는 것을 소년은 느낄 수 있었다.
“Well, then, we’ve got a problem. I can’t help you if you feel you’ve got enough sheep.”
“그거 문제로구나. 양이 충분하다고 생각한다면 내가 너를 도울 방법이 없는데.”
The boy was getting irritated. He wasn’t asking for help. It was the old man who had asked for a drink of his wine, and had started the conversation.
소년은 슬슬 짜증이 났다. 그는 도움을 요청한 적이 없었다. 먼저 와인을 달라고 하며 말을 걸어온 쪽은 노인이었다.
“Give me my book,” the boy said. “I have to go and gather my sheep and get going.”
“제 책 좀 돌려주세요.” 소년이 말했다. “양들을 몰고 이제 그만 떠나야 해요.”
“Give me one-tenth of your sheep,” said the old man, “and I’ll tell you how to find the hidden treasure.”
“네 양의 십분의 일을 내게 주렴. 그러면 숨겨진 보물을 찾는 방법을 알려주마.” 노인이 말했다.
The boy remembered his dream, and suddenly everything was clear to him.
소년은 다시 꿈을 떠올렸다. 그러자 갑자기 모든 것이 명확해졌다.
