“아니, 안 그러실 거야.” 마틸다가 말했다. “왜 그런지 알려 줄까? 아빠가 네 말을 전혀 안 믿으실 테니까.”
“Of course he would.” “He wouldn't,” Matilda said. “And the reason is obvious. Your story would sound too ridiculous to be believed.”
“당연히 믿으시지!” “아니야.” 마틸다가 잘라 말했다. “이유는 뻔해. 네 이야기가 믿기에는 너무 말도 안 되는 소리처럼 들릴 거거든.”
“And that is the Trunchbull's great secret.” “What is?” Lavender asked.

Matilda said, “Never do anything by halves if you want to get away with it. Be outrageous. Go the whole hog.”
마틸다가 대답했다. “무슨 짓을 저지르고도 무사히 넘어가고 싶다면 절대 어설프게 해서는 안 돼. 아주 파격적이어야 하지. 끝장을 봐야 한다고.”
Do anything by halves는 일을 어설프게 하다라는 뜻이며, Go the whole hog는 철저하게 끝까지 하다라는 뜻의 관용구입니다. 트런치불 교장의 악행이 워낙 비현실적이라 오히려 처벌을 면한다는 마틸다의 날카로운 분석입니다.
“Make sure everything you do is so completely crazy it's unbelievable. No parent is going to believe this pigtail story, not in a million years.”

“Do you think she's mad?” Lavender asked. “Who?” “The Trunchbull.”
“그 여자가 미쳤다고 생각해?” 라벤더가 물었다. “누구? 트런치불?”
“No, I don't think she's mad,” Matilda said. “But she's very dangerous. Being in this school is like being in a cage with a cobra.”
“아니, 미친 건 아니라고 봐.” 마틸다가 말했다. “하지만 아주 위험한 여자야. 이 학교에 다니는 건 코브라와 함께 우리에 갇힌 거나 다름없어.”
“You have to be very fast on your feet.” They got another example of how dangerous the Headmistress could be on the very next day.
