Rune bought another Volvo 265 and then a Volvo 745, but a few years later he went back to a sedan model and acquired a Volvo 740.

Whereupon Ove bought yet one more Saab 9000 and Rune eventually went over to a Volvo 760,

after which Ove got himself a Saab 9000i and Rune part-exchanged to a Volvo 760 Turbo.
그 뒤 오베가 사브 9000i를 뽑자 루네는 볼보 760 터보로 보상 판매를 받아 차를 바꿨다.
And then the day came when Ove went to the car dealer to look at the recently launched Saab 9-3,
그러다 마침내 오베가 새로 출시된 사브 9-3을 보러 자동차 대리점에 간 날이 왔다.
and when he came home in the evening, Rune had bought a BMW.
그런데 그가 그날 저녁 집으로 돌아오니, 루네가 BMW를 사버린 것이었다.
독일 브랜드인 BMW를 샀다는 것은, 루네가 스웨덴 자동차라는 공동의 정체성을 버리고 배신을 했다는 의미로 오베에게 받아들여졌을 겁니다.
“A BMW!” Ove had roared at Sonja. “How can you reason with a human being like that? How?”
“BMW라고!” 오베가 소냐에게 소리를 질렀다. “저따위 인간이랑 무슨 대화가 통하겠어? 어떡해?”
And possibly it was not the entire explanation for why these two men loathed one another, Sonja used to explain.
물론 이것이 두 남자가 서로를 혐오하게 된 원인의 전부는 아니었을 것이라고 소냐는 덧붙이곤 했다.
Either you understood it or you didn’t. And if you didn’t understand, there was no point even trying to clarify the rest.
이해를 하든 못 하든 둘 중 하나였고, 이해하지 못하는 사람에게는 나머지 이유를 설명해 봐야 아무 소용도 없었기 때문이다.
Most people never did understand, Ove often commented. But then people had no idea of loyalty these days.
대부분의 사람은 절대로 이해하지 못할 것이라고 오베는 자주 언급했다. 하지만 요즘 사람들은 애초에 충성심이 뭔지도 모르지 않은가.
The car was just “a means of transport” and the road just a complication arising between two points.
자동차는 그저 ‘운송 수단’일 뿐이었고 도로 역시 두 지점 사이에 발생하는 번거로운 장애물에 불과했다.
Ove is convinced this is why the roads are as bad as they are.
오베는 도로 상태가 이 지경인 이유가 바로 그 때문이라고 확신했다.
