Naturally, the van Daans had much to tell about the week we'd been away from civilization.

We were especially interested in what had happened to our apartment and to Mr. Goldschmidt.
특히 우리가 살던 아파트랑 골트슈미트 씨에게 무슨 일이 있었는지 정말 궁금했거든.
Mr. Goldschmidt(골트슈미트 씨)는 앞서 344번 문장에서 언급된 프랑크 가족의 집 위층에 살던 세입자입니다.
Mr. van Daan filled us in: “Monday morning at nine, Mr. Goldschmidt phoned and asked if I could come over.”
반 단 아저씨가 자세히 이야기해 주셨어. “월요일 아침 9시에 골트슈미트 씨가 전화를 해서는 저보고 좀 와달라고 하더군요.”
“I went straightaway and found a very distraught Mr. Goldschmidt. He showed me a note that the Frank family had left behind.”
“즉시 가봤더니 골트슈미트 씨가 아주 넋이 나가 있더군요. 그는 제게 프랑크 가족이 남긴 쪽지를 보여줬습니다.”
“As instructed, he was planning to bring the cat to the neighbors, which I agreed was a good idea.”
“쪽지에 적힌 대로 그는 고양이를 이웃집에 맡길 계획이었는데, 저도 그게 좋은 생각이라고 맞장구쳐줬지요.”
“He was afraid the house was going to be searched, so we went through all the rooms,”
“그는 집 수색을 당할까 봐 겁을 내고 있었고, 그래서 우린 같이 모든 방을 둘러봤습니다,”
“straightening up here and there and clearing the breakfast things off the table.”
“여기저기 정리를 좀 하고 식탁 위에 남아있던 아침 식사 도구들도 치웠죠.”
“Suddenly I saw a notepad on Mrs. Frank's desk, with an address in Maastricht written on it.”
“그러다 갑자기 프랑크 부인의 책상 위에 놓인 메모장이 눈에 띄었는데, 거기 마스트리히트의 어느 주소가 적혀 있더군요.”
Maastricht(마스트리히트)는 네덜란드 남동쪽 끝에 위치한 도시입니다. 벨기에 및 독일 국경과 매우 가까워 당시 탈출 경로로 오해받기 딱 좋은 장소였죠.
“Even though I knew Mrs. Frank had left it on purpose,”
“일부러 남겨둔 주소라는 걸 전 알고 있었지만,”
“I pretended to be surprised and horrified and begged Mr. Goldschmidt to burn this incriminating piece of paper.”
“깜짝 놀라며 겁에 질린 척 연기를 했습니다. 그러고는 골트슈미트 씨에게 이 증거가 될 만한 종이를 당장 태워버리라고 사정했지요.”
반 단 아저씨는 주변 사람들을 완벽하게 속이기 위해 마치 프랑크 가족의 탈출을 돕는 사람처럼 연기를 하고 계시는군요.
“I swore up and down that I knew nothing about your disappearance, but that the note had given me an idea.”
“당신들이 어디로 사라졌는지 전혀 모른다고 딱 잡아떼면서도, 그 쪽지를 보니 짐작 가는 곳이 있다고 말했습니다.”
“‘Mr. Goldschmidt,’ I said, ‘I bet I know what this address refers to.’”
“제가 말했죠. ‘골트슈미트 씨, 이 주소가 뭘 뜻하는지 제가 확실히 알 것 같군요.’”
