우리 엄마는 무조건 젊은 세대의 편을 들어주셔. 한두 번 실랑이를 벌이고 나면 결국 엄마 뜻대로 결론이 나곤 하지.

절인 혀가 든 병 중 하나가 상해버렸어. 덕분에 고양이 무시와 보슈에겐 잔칫날이 됐지.
You haven't met Boche yet, despite the fact that she was here before we went into hiding.
너한테 보슈는 아직 소개 안 했지? 우리가 은신처로 들어오기 전부터 여기 있었는데 말이야.
Boche(보슈)는 앞서 소개된 고양이 무시와 달리, 은신처 건물 창고에서 살고 있던 고양이입니다.
She's the warehouse and office cat, who keeps the rats at bay in the storeroom.
보슈는 창고와 사무실을 지키는 고양이야. 창고에 쥐가 얼씬도 못 하게 쫓아버리는 역할을 해.
Her odd, political name can easily be explained. For a while the firm Gies & Co. had two cats:
이 고양이의 이름이 왜 이렇게 묘하게 정치적인지는 쉽게 설명할 수 있어. 한동안 히스 앤 코에는 고양이가 두 마리 있었거든.
one for the warehouse and one for the attic. Their paths crossed from time to time, which invariably resulted in a fight.
한 마리는 창고용이었고 한 마리는 다락용이었는데, 둘이 가끔 마주칠 때마다 아주 치열하게 싸워댔어.
The warehouse cat was always the aggressor, while the attic cat was ultimately the victor, just as in politics.
늘 창고 고양이가 먼저 선공을 날렸지만, 정치판이 그렇듯 결국 승리하는 건 항상 다락 고양이였지.
So the warehouse cat was named the German, or “Boche,” and the attic cat the Englishman, or “Tommy.”
그래서 창고 고양이는 독일놈이라는 뜻의 “보슈”라고 불렀고, 다락 고양이는 영국인이라는 뜻의 “토미”라고 불렀어.
Boche(보슈)는 프랑스인들이 독일군을 비하하며 불렀던 단어이며, Tommy(토미)는 영국 병사를 부르는 별칭입니다. 고양이들의 관계를 전쟁 상황에 비유한 안네의 발상이 재미있군요.
Sometime after that they got rid of Tommy, but Boche is always there to amuse us when we go downstairs.
얼마 뒤에 토미는 없어졌지만, 보슈는 우리가 아래층에 내려갈 때마다 우리를 아주 즐겁게 해 줘.
