“What?” everyone cried, and believe me—I was right along with them. I was not prepared for a quiz!

“Everything!” she said. “Come on, you’re wasting valuable time.”
“전부 치우세요!” 선생님이 말씀하셨다. “어서요, 귀중한 시간을 낭비하고 있잖아요.”
The room filled with grumbles and the sound of shuffling binders, and when we’d all pretty much complied with her request,
교실은 불평 섞인 소리와 바인더 정리하는 소리로 가득 찼다. 우리가 선생님의 요구에 거의 다 따랐을 즈음,
she picked a stack of bright yellow papers off her desk, fanned them with an evil grin, and said, “It’s time to vote for basket boys!”
선생님은 책상에서 밝은 노란색 종이 뭉치를 집어 들더니, 짓궂은 미소를 지으며 종이를 펼쳐 보이셨다. “이제 바구니 소년들을 투표할 시간이에요!”
앞서 브라이스의 시점에서 설명되었던 바구니 소년(ID 2578) 선발을 위한 투표가 시작되는 장면입니다.
A wave of relief swept across the room. “Basket boys? You mean it’s not a quiz?”
안도감이 교실 전체를 휩쓸고 지나갔다. “바구니 소년들이요? 쪽지 시험이 아니란 말씀이세요?”
She ticked through the stack, counting ballots as she spoke.
선생님은 종이 뭉치를 넘기며 투표용지를 세며 말씀하셨다.
“It is like a quiz in that I don’t want you conferring with one another. It’s also like a quiz in that you have a limited amount of time.”
“서로 의논해서는 안 된다는 점에서는 쪽지 시험과 같죠. 제한 시간이 있다는 점에서도 쪽지 시험과 같고요.”
She slapped a set of ballots down on the first desk of row one, then went on to the second row.
선생님은 1열의 첫 번째 책상에 투표용지 뭉치를 탁 내려놓고는 2열로 향했다.
“I will collect them from you individually when the bell rings, and I will inspect to see that you have complied with the following instructions.”
“종이 울리면 한 명씩 투표용지를 걷겠습니다. 그리고 여러분이 지시 사항을 잘 따랐는지 일일이 확인할 거예요.”
She scooted over to row three. “Choose five, and only five, of the boys on the list.
선생님은 3열로 자리를 옮겼다. “명단에 있는 남학생 중 다섯 명만, 딱 다섯 명만 고르세요.”
Do not put your name on it, and do not discuss your choices with your neighbors.”
“용지에 본인 이름을 쓰지 말고, 선택한 명단에 대해 친구와 의논하지도 마세요.”
