I was too busy scanning the crowd for Jumbo Jenny, sweating my pits off.

Mrs. McClure calls into the microphone, “Do I hear ten?” and it took me a minute to tune in to the fact that no one said “Ten!”
맥클루어 부인이 마이크에 대고 “10달러 있나요?” 하고 외쳤지만, 아무도 “10달러요!”라고 대답하지 않는다는 사실을 깨닫기까지는 시간이 좀 걸렸다.
tune in to는 라디오 채널을 맞추듯 주변 상황을 서서히 파악하거나 깨닫다라는 뜻입니다.
No one said anything. “Come on, out there! The lunch is delicious. Strawberry tarts, um… ”
누구 하나 입을 떼지 않았다. “자, 여러분! 도시락이 정말 맛있어요. 딸기 타르트도 있고, 음... ”
And Mrs. McClure goes back to reading off the three-by-five about Jon Trulock’s lunch.
맥클루어 부인은 다시 존 트루락의 도시락에 대해 적힌 카드를 읽어 내려갔다.
Talk about embarrassing! This was worse than being a mama’s boy. Worse than lunch with Jumbo Jenny!

Then off to the right of the crowd I hear, “Ten!” “Ten? Did I hear ten?” Mrs. McClure says with a fluttery smile.

“Twelve!” came a different voice from the same area.
“12달러요!” 같은 쪽에서 다른 목소리가 들려왔다.
The first voice came back with “Fifteen!” and all of a sudden I recognized whose voice it was. Juli Baker’s.
첫 번째 목소리가 다시 “15달러!”라고 외쳤고, 나는 그것이 누구의 목소리인지 단번에 알아차렸다. 줄리 베이커였다.

I searched through the crowd and found her, hand waving in the air, that look all over her face.

“Sixteen!” came the other voice. There was a pause, but then Juli shoots back with “Eighteen!”

“Eighteen!” cries Mrs. McClure, who looks like she’s about to collapse from relief.
