“Don’t you want some help?” She glanced my way. “It sure looks like you need it.”

“그 상자 안에는 아주 귀중한 물건들이 들어 있단다.”
“Oh. Well, how about this one?” She scoots over to a box labeled LENOX and looks my way again.
“아, 그럼 이건 어때요?” 그녀는 레녹스라고 적힌 상자 쪽으로 다가가더니 나를 다시 쳐다보았다.
LENOX는 미국의 유명한 고급 식기 브랜드입니다. 깨지기 쉬운 고가의 물건들이 들어 있기에 아빠가 예민하게 반응하시는 것으로 보입니다.
“We should push it together!” “No, no, no!” my dad says, then pulls her up by the arm.
“우리 이거 같이 밀자!” “안 돼, 안 돼, 안 돼!” 아빠는 그렇게 말하며 그녀의 팔을 잡아 일으켜 세웠다.
“Why don’t you run along home? Your mother’s probably wondering where you are.”
“이제 그만 집에 가보렴. 네 엄마가 어디 있는지 궁금해하실 거다.”
This was the beginning of my soon-to-become-acute awareness that the girl cannot take a hint.
그건 이 여자애가 눈치라고는 전혀 없다는 사실을 뼈저리게 깨닫기 시작한 신호탄이었다.
take a hint는 상대방이 넌지시 건네는 말이나 태도에서 그 의도를 알아차리는 것, 즉 눈치를 채다라는 뜻의 관용구입니다.
Of any kind. Does she zip on home like a kid should when they’ve been invited to leave? No.
어떤 종류의 눈치도 말이다. 가라는 소리를 들었을 때 여느 애들처럼 집으로 쌩하니 달려갔을까? 아니.
She says, “Oh, my mom knows where I am. She said it was fine.”
그녀는 이렇게 말했다. “아, 우리 엄마는 저 여기 있는 거 알아요. 괜찮다고 하셨거든요.”
Then she points across the street and says, “We just live right over there.”
그러더니 길 건너편을 가리키며 덧붙였다. “우리는 바로 저기 살아요.”
My father looks to where she’s pointing and mutters, “Oh boy.”
아빠는 그녀가 가리키는 곳을 보더니 중얼거렸다. “이런 세상에.”
