“Here she is,” Aunt Alexandra called, pulling me along with her to the telephone.
“얘 여기 있어요.” 알렉산드라 고모는 나를 전화기 쪽으로 끌고 가며 소리쳤다.
She tugged at me anxiously. “I’m all right, Aunty,” I said, “you better call.”
고모는 걱정스럽게 나를 잡아당겼다. “전 괜찮아요, 고모. 어서 전화부터 하세요.” 내가 말했다.
She pulled the receiver from the hook and said, “Eula May, get Dr. Reynolds, quick!”
고모는 수화기를 들고 말했다. “율라 메이, 빨리 레이놀즈 의사 선생님 좀 연결해 줘요!”
Eula May(율라 메이)는 메이콤의 전화 교환수입니다. 당시에는 전화를 걸면 교환수가 상대방을 연결해 주는 방식이었기 때문에, 모든 집안 사정을 훤히 꿰뚫고 있는 인물이기도 했죠.
“Agnes, is your father home? Oh God, where is he? Please tell him to come over here as soon as he comes in. Please, it’s urgent!”
“아그네스, 아버님 계시니? 오 세상에, 어디 가셨니? 들어오시는 대로 곧장 이리로 좀 와달라고 전해다오. 제발 부탁이야, 급한 일이야!”
There was no need for Aunt Alexandra to identify herself, people in Maycomb knew each other’s voices.
알렉산드라 고모가 굳이 자기 이름을 밝힐 필요는 없었다. 메이콤 사람들은 서로의 목소리를 다 알고 있었다.
Atticus came out of Jem’s room. The moment Aunt Alexandra broke the connection, Atticus took the receiver from her.
아빠가 젬 오빠의 방에서 나오셨다. 알렉산드라 고모가 전화를 끊자마자 아빠는 고모에게서 수화기를 건네받으셨다.
