“Atticus said one time the reason Aunty’s so hipped on the family is because all we’ve got’s background and not a dime to our names.”
“아빠가 예전에 그러셨는데, 고모가 가문에 그렇게 집착하는 이유는 우리한테 남은 건 가문 배경뿐이고 돈은 한 푼도 없기 때문이래.”
hipped on은 무엇인가에 열광하다 혹은 집착하다라는 뜻의 구어체 표현입니다. 경제적으로 넉넉지 못한 현실을 가문의 자부심으로 보상받으려는 고모의 심리를 아빠가 예리하게 짚어내셨네요.
“Well Jem, I don’t know—Atticus told me one time that most of this Old Family stuff’s foolishness”
“글쎄 오빠, 난 잘 모르겠어. 아빠는 언젠가 명문가니 뭐니 하는 것들은 대부분 다 어리석은 짓이라고 하셨어.”
“because everybody’s family’s just as old as everybody else’s. I said did that include the colored folks and Englishmen and he said yes.”
“모든 사람의 가문은 다른 사람의 가문만큼이나 오래된 거니까 말이야. 내가 흑인이나 영국인도 포함되느냐고 여쭤봤더니 아빠도 그렇다고 하셨어.”
“Background doesn’t mean Old Family,” said Jem. “I think it’s how long your family’s been readin‘ and writin’.”
“배경이 명문가를 뜻하는 건 아니야.” 젬 오빠가 말했다. “내 생각엔 그 집안사람들이 얼마나 오랫동안 읽고 써왔느냐 하는 문제인 것 같아.”
“Scout, I’ve studied this real hard and that’s the only reason I can think of.”
“스카우트, 내가 이 문제를 정말 깊이 고민해 봤는데, 내가 생각할 수 있는 이유는 그것뿐이야.”
“Somewhere along when the Finches were in Egypt one of ‘em must have learned a hieroglyphic or two and he taught his boy.”
“먼 옛날 핀치 가문 사람들이 이집트에 살 때 누군가 상형문자를 한두 개 배워서 자기 아들에게 가르쳐 줬을 거야.”
hieroglyphic(상형문자)까지 언급하며 가문의 역사를 거슬러 올라가는 젬의 상상력이 무척 기발합니다. 교육의 대물림이 가문의 격을 결정한다는 나름의 논리를 세우고 있군요.
Jem laughed. “Imagine Aunty being proud her great-grandaddy could read an’ write— ladies pick funny things to be proud of.”
오빠가 웃음을 터뜨렸다. “고모가 자기 증조할아버지가 글을 읽고 쓸 줄 알았다는 걸 자랑스러워한다고 생각해 봐. 여자들은 참 이상한 걸 자랑거리로 삼는다니까.”
“Well I’m glad he could, or who’da taught Atticus and them, and if Atticus couldn’t read, you and me’d be in a fix.”
“어쨌든 난 그분이 글을 아셔서 다행이라고 생각해. 안 그랬으면 누가 아빠랑 다른 분들을 가르쳤겠어. 만약 아빠가 글을 못 읽으셨다면 오빠랑 나도 곤란했을걸.”
in a fix는 진퇴양난에 빠지다 혹은 곤경에 처하다라는 뜻입니다. 지식이 곧 힘이라는 것을 본능적으로 알고 있는 스카우트의 대답이 꽤 어른스럽습니다.
“I don’t think that’s what background is, Jem.” “Well then, how do you explain why the Cunninghams are different?”
“오빠, 난 배경이라는 게 그런 건 아닌 것 같아.” “그럼 넌 커닝햄 사람들이 왜 우리랑 다른지 어떻게 설명할 건데?”
“Mr. Walter can hardly sign his name, I’ve seen him. We’ve just been readin‘ and writin’ longer’n they have.”
“월터 아저씨는 자기 이름도 겨우 쓰셔, 내가 봤어. 우린 그냥 그들보다 읽고 쓰는 걸 조금 더 오래 해왔을 뿐이야.”
“No, everybody’s gotta learn, nobody’s born knowin‘. That Walter’s as smart as he can be,”
“아니야, 누구든 배워야 하는 거야. 태어날 때부터 아는 사람은 없으니까. 월터는 정말 똑똑한 애란 말이야.”
