“그 책이 뭐였는데요, 아주머니?” 내가 묻자 “블랙스톤의 주해였단다.”라고 대답하셨다. 젬 오빠는 깜짝 놀랐다.
Blackstones Commentaries(블랙스톤의 주해)는 영국의 법학자 윌리엄 블랙스톤이 쓴 근대 영법의 기초가 된 아주 유명한 법률 해설서입니다. 지보가 이런 고전 법률 서적으로 글을 배웠다는 사실에 젬이 큰 충격을 받은 것이죠.
“You mean you taught Zeebo outa that?” “Why yes sir, Mister Jem.” Calpurnia timidly put her fingers to her mouth.
“그 책으로 지보 아저씨를 가르치셨단 말이에요?” “그럼요, 젬 도련님.” 캘퍼니아 아주머니는 수줍게 손가락을 입가에 갖다 댔다.
“They were the only books I had. Your grandaddy said Mr. Blackstone wrote fine English—”
“내가 가진 책이라곤 그것뿐이었거든. 너희 할아버지께서 블랙스톤 씨가 훌륭한 영어를 구사한다고 말씀하셨단다—”
“That’s why you don’t talk like the rest of ‘em,” said Jem. “The rest of who?”
“그래서 아주머니 말투가 다른 사람들과 다르군요.” 오빠가 말했다. “다른 누구 말이냐?”
“Rest of the colored folks, Cal, but you talked like they did in church…”
“다른 흑인들 말이에요. 그런데 아까 교회에서는 그 사람들처럼 말씀하시던데요……”
That Calpurnia led a modest double life never dawned on me.
캘퍼니아 아주머니가 소박한 이중생활을 하고 있다는 사실은 꿈에도 생각지 못한 일이었다.

“Cal,” I asked, “why do you talk nigger-talk to the—to your folks when you know it’s not right?”
“아주머니,” 내가 물었다. “옳지 않은 말투라는 걸 아시면서 왜 흑인들끼리 있을 때는 그렇게 말씀하시는 거예요?”
“Well, in the first place I’m black—” “That doesn’t mean you hafta talk that way when you know better,” said Jem.
“글쎄다, 우선 내가 흑인이잖니—” “더 고상한 말투를 아시는데 굳이 그렇게 말씀하실 필요는 없잖아요.” 오빠가 말을 잘랐다.
Calpurnia tilted her hat and scratched her head, then pressed her hat down carefully over her ears.
캘퍼니아 아주머니는 모자를 비스듬히 젖히고 머리를 긁적거리더니, 다시 모자를 귀 위까지 꾹 눌러 썼다.
