Jem seemed fascinated by a rose in the carpet. “Atticus,” he said, “she wants me to read to her.”

Atticus, do I have to?” “Certainly.” “But she wants me to do it for a month.” “Then you’ll do it for a month.”
“아빠, 제가 꼭 해야 하나요?” “물론이지.” “하지만 한 달 동안이나 하라고 하셨단 말이에요.” “그럼 한 달 동안 해드려야지.”
Jem planted his big toe delicately in the center of the rose and pressed it in.
오빠는 엄지발가락을 장미 문양 한가운데에 조심스럽게 갖다 대고는 꾹 눌렀다.
Finally he said, “Atticus, it’s all right on the sidewalk but inside it’s—it’s all dark and creepy. There’s shadows and things on the ceiling…”
마침내 오빠가 입을 뗐다. “아빠, 바깥 보도는 괜찮은데 집 안은— 집 안은 너무 어둡고 으스스해요. 천장에 그림자 같은 것들도 보이고요……”
Atticus smiled grimly. “That should appeal to your imagination. Just pretend you’re inside the Radley house.”
아빠는 씁쓸하게 미소 지으셨다. “그거 참 네 상상력을 자극하겠구나. 그냥 래들리 집 안에 들어와 있다고 생각하렴.”
The following Monday afternoon Jem and I climbed the steep front steps to Mrs. Dubose’s house and padded down the open hallway.

“Mrs. Dubose?” he called. Jessie opened the wood door and unlatched the screen door.
“듀보스 할머니?” 오빠가 불렀다. 제시가 나무 문을 열고 망사 문의 걸쇠를 풀었다.
“Is that you, Jem Finch?” she said. “You got your sister with you. I don’t know—”
“젬 핀치니?” 그녀가 물었다. “동생도 데려왔구나. 음, 잘 모르겠는데—”
“Let them both in, Jessie,” said Mrs. Dubose. Jessie admitted us and went off to the kitchen.
“둘 다 들어오게 해라, 제시.” 듀보스 할머니가 말씀하셨다. 제시는 우리를 들여보내고 주방으로 가버렸다.
