Wilbur’s Boast
윌버의 자랑
새로운 장이 시작되며, 샬롯과 윌버가 나누는 거미줄에 관한 흥미로운 대화로 초점이 옮겨집니다.
A spider’s web is stronger than it looks. Although it is made of thin, delicate strands, the web is not easily broken.
거미줄은 보기보다 훨씬 튼튼하답니다. 아주 가늘고 섬세한 줄로 만들어졌지만 그리 쉽게 끊어지지 않거든요.
However, a web gets torn every day by the insects that kick around in it, and a spider must rebuild it when it gets full of holes.
하지만 벌레들이 거미줄에 걸려 버둥거리다 보면 매일 줄이 찢어지곤 해요. 그래서 거미는 거미줄에 구멍이 날 때마다 다시 짜야만 한답니다.
Charlotte liked to do her weaving during the late afternoon, and Fern liked to sit nearby and watch.
샬롯은 주로 늦은 오후에 거미줄을 짜는 걸 좋아했고, 펀은 근처에 앉아 그 모습을 지켜보는 걸 좋아했어요.
One afternoon she heard a most interesting conversation and witnessed a strange event.
그러던 어느 오후였어요. 펀은 아주 흥미로운 대화를 듣게 되었고 묘한 광경을 목격했답니다.
“You have awfully hairy legs, Charlotte,” said Wilbur, as the spider busily worked at her task.
“샬롯, 네 다리는 정말 털이 숭숭 났구나.” 샬롯이 거미줄을 짜느라 바쁘게 움직일 때 윌버가 말했어요.
“My legs are hairy for a good reason,” replied Charlotte. “Furthermore, each leg of mine has seven sections—
“내 다리에 털이 난 데는 다 그럴만한 이유가 있단다.” 샬롯이 대답했어요. “게다가 내 다리는 마디가 일곱 개나 돼.”
the coxa, the trochanter, the femur, the patella, the tibia, the metatarsus, and the tarsus.”
“기절, 전퇴, 퇴절, 슬개절, 경절, 후부절, 그리고 부절까지 말이야.”
샬롯이 나열하는 명칭들은 실제 거미 다리의 구조를 나타내는 정확한 생물학적 용어들입니다. 샬롯의 지적이고 전문적인 면모를 엿볼 수 있습니다.
Wilbur sat bolt upright. “You’re kidding,” he said. “No, I’m not, either.”
윌버가 허리를 꼿꼿이 세우고 앉았어요. “거짓말이지?” “아니야, 정말이라니까.”
“Say those names again, I didn’t catch them the first time.” “Coxa, trochanter, femur, patella, tibia, metatarsus, and tarsus.”
“그 이름들 다시 한번만 말해 줘. 아까는 제대로 못 들었어.” “기절, 전퇴, 퇴절, 슬개절, 경절, 후부절, 그리고 부절.”
“Goodness!” said Wilbur, looking down at his own chubby legs. “I don’t think my legs have seven sections.”
“어머나!” 윌버가 자신의 포동포동한 다리를 내려다보며 말했어요. “내 다리는 일곱 마디나 되지 않는 것 같은데.”
