“And now, Fern, it’s time to get ready for Sunday School. And tell Avery to get ready.”
“자, 펀, 이제 주일 학교에 갈 준비를 해야지. 에이머리한테도 준비하라고 전해주렴.”
Sunday School(주일 학교)은 당시 미국 기독교 문화권 가정의 지극히 평범한 일요일 아침 풍경을 보여줍니다.
“And this afternoon you can tell me more about what goes on in Uncle Homer’s barn.”
“오늘 오후에는 호머 외삼촌네 외양간에서 무슨 일이 있었는지 엄마한테 좀 더 이야기해 주겠니?”
“Aren’t you spending quite a lot of time there? You go there almost every afternoon, don’t you?”
“거기서 꽤 많은 시간을 보내는 것 같더구나. 거의 매일 오후마다 가는 거 아니니?”
“I like it there,” replied Fern. She wiped her mouth and ran upstairs.
“전 거기가 좋거든요.” 펀이 대답했어요. 펀은 입을 닦고는 이층으로 뛰어 올라갔답니다.
펀이 자리를 비우면서, 이제 부모님들만 남은 식탁의 분위기가 사뭇 진지하게 바뀝니다.
After she had left the room, Mrs. Arable spoke in a low voice to her husband.
펀이 방에서 나가자, 애러블 부인은 남편에게 낮은 목소리로 속삭였어요.
“I worry about Fern,” she said. “Did you hear the way she rambled on about the animals, pretending that they talked?”
“펀이 정말 걱정돼요. 동물들이 말을 하는 것처럼 떠들어 대는 거 들었죠?”
Mr. Arable chuckled. “Maybe they do talk,” he said. “I’ve sometimes wondered.”
애러블 씨가 껄껄 웃으며 말했어요. “정말 말을 할지도 모르죠. 저도 가끔 궁금할 때가 있거든요.”
“At any rate, don’t worry about Fern—she’s just got a lively imagination. Kids think they hear all sorts of things.”
“어쨌든 너무 걱정 말아요. 그냥 상상력이 풍부해서 그런 거니까요. 아이들은 원래 이런저런 소리를 다 듣는 법이잖아요.”
“Just the same, I do worry about her,” replied Mrs. Arable. “I think I shall ask Dr. Dorian about her the next time I see him.”
“그래도 걱정이 되는걸요.” 애러블 부인이 대답했어요. “다음에 도리언 박사님을 만나면 펀에 대해 한번 여쭤봐야겠어요.”
도리언 박사님(Dr. Dorian)은 애러블 씨 가족의 주치의입니다. 마을 사람들로부터 신뢰를 받는 인물로 묘사됩니다.
“He loves Fern almost as much as we do, and I want him to know how queerly she is acting about that pig and everything.”
“박사님도 우리만큼이나 펀을 아끼시니까, 그 돼지며 이런저런 일들에 대해 펀이 얼마나 이상하게 행동하는지 박사님도 아셔야 해요.”
“I don’t think it’s normal. You know perfectly well animals don’t talk.”
“전혀 정상적인 것 같지 않거든요. 당신도 알다시피 동물들은 말을 못 하잖아요.”
Mr. Arable grinned. “Maybe our ears aren’t as sharp as Fern’s,” he said.
애러블 씨가 싱긋 웃으며 말했어요. “어쩌면 우리 귀가 펀만큼 밝지 않은 걸지도 모르죠.”
