새로운 챕터가 시작되었습니다. 티블 살인 사건의 수사가 진행 중인 시점입니다.
Ashley Patterson followed the investigation of Dennis Tibble's murder in the newspapers and on television every day.
애슐리 패터슨은 매일 신문과 텔레비전을 통해 데니스 티블 살인 사건의 수사 과정을 지켜보았다.
The police appeared to have reached a dead end. It's over, Ashley thought.
경찰 수사는 막다른 골목에 다다른 것처럼 보였다. ‘이제 다 끝났어.’ 애슐리는 생각했다.
There's nothing more to worry about. That evening Deputy Sam Blake appeared at her apartment.
더 이상 걱정할 것은 없었다. 그런데 그날 저녁, 샘 블레이크 부관이 그녀의 아파트에 나타났다.
사건이 일단락되는 듯 보였으나 수사관인 블레이크 부관이 다시 등장하며 극의 긴장감이 다시 고조됩니다.
Ashley looked at him, her mouth suddenly dry. “I hope I'm not bothering you,” Deputy Blake said.
애슐리는 입안이 바짝 마르는 것을 느끼며 그를 쳐다보았다. “방해하려던 건 아닙니다.” 블레이크 부관이 말했다.
“I was on my way home, and I just thought I'd drop in for a minute.” Ashley swallowed. “No. Come in.”
“퇴근하는 길에 잠시 들러보고 싶어서요.” 애슐리는 침을 삼켰다. “아니에요. 들어오세요.”
Deputy Blake walked into the apartment. “Nice place you have here.” “Thank you.”
블레이크 부관이 아파트 안으로 들어왔다. “집이 아주 근사하군요.” “고맙습니다.”
“I'll bet Dennis Tibble didn't like this kind of furniture.” Ashley's heart began to pound.
“데니스 티블은 이런 가구를 별로 좋아하지 않았을 것 같네요.” 애슐리의 심장이 요동치기 시작했다.
“I don't know. He's never been in this apartment.” “Oh. I thought he might have, you know.”
“잘 모르겠어요. 그는 우리 집에 온 적이 없거든요.” “아, 전 혹시나 해서요. 아시겠지만 말입니다.”
“No, I don't know, Deputy. I told you, I never dated him.” “Right. May I sit down?”
“아니요, 부관님. 전 그와 데이트한 적이 없다고 말씀드렸잖아요.” “알겠습니다. 좀 앉아도 될까요?”
“Please.” “You see, I'm having a big problem with this case, Miss Patterson. It doesn't fit into any pattern.”
“그러세요.” “보시다시피, 패터슨 양. 전 이 사건 때문에 골치가 아픕니다. 그 어떤 패턴과도 맞지 않거든요.”
“Like I said, there's always a motive. I've talked to some of the people over at Global Computer Graphics,”
“제가 말씀드렸듯이 모든 범죄에는 동기가 있기 마련이죠. 글로벌 컴퓨터 그래픽스의 직원들 몇 명과 이야기를 나눠봤는데,”
