A patrolman in the living room was talking to the building superintendent. “Where’s the body?” Blake asked.
거실에서는 한 순경이 건물 관리인과 이야기를 나누고 있었다. “시신은 어디 있나?” 블레이크가 물었다.
The patrolman nodded toward the bedroom. “In there, sir.” He looked pale. Blake walked to the bedroom and stopped, in shock.
순경이 침실 쪽을 가리켰다. “저 안입니다, 부관님.” 그의 얼굴은 창백하게 질려 있었다. 블레이크는 침실로 걸어가다 충격에 휩싸여 멈춰 섰다.
A man’s naked body was sprawled across the bed, and Blake’s first impression was that the room was soaked in blood.
벌거벗은 남자의 시신이 침대 위에 대자로 뻗어 있었고, 블레이크가 받은 첫인상은 방 안이 온통 피로 물들어 있다는 것이었다.
As he stepped closer to the bed, he saw where the blood had come from.
그가 침대 가까이 다가가자 피가 어디서 흘러나왔는지 보였다.
The ragged edge of a broken bottle had punctured the victim’s back, over and over again, and there were shards of glass in his body.
깨진 병의 날카롭고 거친 파편이 희생자의 등을 몇 번이고 찔렀고, 몸 안에는 유리 조각들이 박혀 있었다.
The victim’s testicles had been slashed off. Looking at it, Blake felt a pain in his groin.
희생자의 고환은 잘려 나간 상태였다. 그 광경을 바라보던 블레이크는 자신의 사타구니가 다 아려오는 것을 느꼈다.
앞서 5장 마지막에서 언급되었던 끔찍한 살해 수법이 형사의 시점에서 더욱 생생하게 묘사되고 있습니다. 동일범의 소행임을 강력하게 시사하고 있군요.
“How the hell could a human being do a thing like this?” he said aloud.
“도대체 인간이 어떻게 이런 짓을 저지를 수 있단 말인가?” 그가 멍하니 읊조렸다.
There was no sign of the weapon, but they would make a thorough search.
흉기의 흔적은 보이지 않았지만, 그들은 철저한 수색을 벌일 작정이었다.
Deputy Blake went back into the living room to talk to the building superintendent. “Did you know the deceased?”
블레이크 부관은 다시 거실로 나가 건물 관리인에게 물었다. “고인과 아는 사이였습니까?”
“Yes, sir. This is his apartment.” “What’s his name?” “Tibble. Dennis Tibble.” Deputy Blake made a note.
“네, 그렇습니다. 여기가 그 사람 아파트예요.” “이름이 뭡니까?” “티블입니다. 데니스 티블요.” 블레이크 부관은 수첩에 메모를 했다.
“How long had he lived here?” “Almost three years.” “What can you tell me about him?” “Not too much, sir.”
“여기 산 지는 얼마나 됐습니까?” “거의 3년 다 되어 갑니다.” “그에 대해 아는 게 있나요?” “그렇게 많지는 않습니다.”
