There was a long silence. Otto Lewison said, “I’m terribly sorry.”
긴 침묵이 흘렀다. 오토 루이슨이 말했다. “정말 안타까운 일이군요.”
“But I think you’ve given us the answer to what we’ve been looking for, Dr. Patterson. Now Dr. Keller will have something specific to work on.”
“하지만 박사님 덕분에 저희가 찾던 해답을 얻은 것 같습니다, 패터슨 박사님. 이제 켈러 박사가 집중해야 할 구체적인 목표가 생겼으니까요.”
“It’s been too painful for me even to discuss before.” “I understand.”
“전에는 너무 고통스러워서 차마 입 밖으로 꺼낼 수조차 없었습니다.” “이해합니다.”
Otto Lewison looked at his watch. “Ashley’s going to be a little while.”
오토 루이슨이 시계를 보았다. “애슐리가 나오려면 시간이 좀 걸릴 겁니다.”
“Why don’t you join Miss Aniston in the garden, and I’ll send Ashley out when she comes.”
“정원에서 애니스톤 양과 함께 기다리시는 게 어떨까요. 애슐리가 나오면 그쪽으로 보내겠습니다.”
Dr. Patterson rose. “Thank you. I will.” Otto Lewison watched him leave.
패터슨 박사가 자리에서 일어났다. “고맙습니다. 그러도록 하죠.” 오토 루이슨은 그가 나가는 모습을 지켜보았다.
He could not wait to tell Dr. Keller what he had learned. Victoria Aniston and Katrina were waiting for him.
그는 자신이 알게 된 사실을 어서 빨리 켈러 박사에게 말해주고 싶어 견딜 수 없었다. 밖에서는 빅토리아 애니스톤과 카트리나가 그를 기다리고 있었다.
장면이 루이슨 박사의 집무실에서 일행이 기다리는 병원 정원으로 전환되었습니다.
“Did you see Ashley?” Victoria asked. “They’ll send her out in a few minutes,” Dr. Patterson said.
“애슐리는 만났어요?” 빅토리아가 물었다. “몇 분 뒤면 나올 거야.” 패터슨 박사가 대답했다.
He looked around the spacious grounds. “This is lovely, isn’t it?”
그는 탁 트인 교정을 둘러보았다. “참 아름다운 곳이지, 안 그래?”
Katrina ran up to him, “I want to go up to the sky again.” He smiled. “All right.”
카트리나가 그에게 달려왔다. “나 또 하늘 높이 올려줘요.” 그가 미소를 지었다. “그래, 알았다.”
He picked her up, threw her into the air and caught her as she came down.
그는 아이를 번쩍 들어 올려 공중으로 던졌다가 내려오는 아이를 받아냈다.
“Higher!” “Hang on. Here we go.” He threw her up again and caught her, and she was screaming with delight.
“더 높이요!” “꽉 잡아라. 자, 간다.” 그는 아이를 다시 던져 올렸고, 아이는 즐거운 듯 비명을 질렀다.
