Sandra was studying his face. “Do you think you could?”

“I don’t know. Kincaid doesn’t want me to take the case. If I did take it, I could lose the partnership.”

“Oh.” There was a long silence. When he spoke, David said, “I have a choice.”

“I can say no to Dr. Patterson and become a partner in the firm,”
“패터슨 박사님께 거절하고 로펌의 파트너가 되거나,”
“or I can defend his daughter and probably go on an unpaid leave, and see what happens afterward.”
“아니면 그분 딸의 변호를 맡고 무급 휴직을 떠난 뒤, 나중에 어떻게 될지 지켜보는 거지.”
unpaid leave(무급 휴직)는 파트너 승진을 앞둔 데이비드에게는 사실상 경력 단절이나 좌천을 의미하는 가혹한 선택지입니다.
Sandra was listening quietly. “There are people much better qualified to handle Ashley’s case,”
산드라는 묵묵히 듣고 있었다. “애슐리의 사건을 맡기에 훨씬 더 자격 있는 사람들이 많아.”
“but for some damn reason, her father won’t hear of anyone else.”
“하지만 도대체 무슨 이유에선지 그분 아버지는 다른 사람은 절대 안 된다고 하셔.”
“I don’t know why he’s so stubborn about it, but he is. If I take the case and I don’t get the partnership,”
“왜 그렇게 고집을 부리시는지는 모르겠지만 어쨌든 그래. 내가 이 사건을 맡아서 파트너가 되지 못하면,”
“we’ll have to forget about moving. We’ll have to forget about a lot of our plans, Sandra.”
“이사 가는 건 포기해야 할 거야. 산드라, 우리 계획 중 많은 걸 포기해야 할지도 몰라.”
Sandra said softly, “I remember before we were married, you told me about him.”
산드라가 부드러운 목소리로 말했다. “결혼하기 전에 당신이 그분에 대해 이야기해 줬던 거 기억나.”
“He was one of the busiest doctors in the world, but he found time to help a penniless young boy.”
“세상에서 제일 바쁜 의사 중 한 명이었지만, 돈 한 푼 없는 어린 소년을 돕기 위해 기꺼이 시간을 내주셨던 분이라고.”
“He was your hero, David. You said that if we ever had a son, you would want him to grow up to be like Steven Patterson.”
“데이비드, 그분은 당신의 영웅이었잖아. 우리에게 아들이 생긴다면 스티븐 패터슨 같은 사람으로 자라길 바란다고 말했었지.”
