But I guess there’s not a lot to tell because he just keeps giving me books that he doesn’t give his other students,
딱히 특별한 일은 없었어. 선생님은 여전히 다른 학생들에게는 주지 않는 책들을 나에게만 계속 빌려주시고 계시거든.
and I keep reading them, and he keeps asking me to write papers, and I do.
난 그 책들을 읽고, 선생님은 리포트를 써오라고 하시고, 그럼 난 또 써가고. 그런 일상의 반복이야.
In the last month or so, I have read The Great Gatsby and A Separate Peace.
지난 한 달 동안에는 ‘위대한 개츠비’랑 ‘분리된 평화’를 읽었어.
위대한 개츠비(The Great Gatsby)와 분리된 평화(A Separate Peace)는 미국의 대표적인 고전 소설들입니다. 특히 분리된 평화는 사춘기 소년들의 복잡한 우정과 심리를 다루고 있어, 빌 선생님이 찰리에게 이 책을 권한 의도를 짐작해볼 수 있습니다.
I am starting to see a real trend in the kind of books Bill gives me to read.
빌 선생님이 나에게 읽으라고 주시는 책들의 어떤 공통적인 경향이 보이기 시작했어.
And just like the tape of songs, it is amazing to hold each of them in the palm of my hand.
노래 테이프를 가졌을 때처럼, 이 책들을 한 권씩 내 손바닥 위에 올려놓고 있으면 정말 놀라운 기분이 들어.
They are all my favorites. All of them.
그 책들 전부 내가 제일 좋아하는 책들이 됐어. 하나도 빠짐없이 전부 다.

12월 11일의 새로운 기록입니다. 시크릿 산타 활동이 학교에서 한창 진행 중인 시점입니다.
Dear friend, Patrick loved the tape! I think he knows that I’m his Secret Santa, though, because I think he knows that only I would do a tape like that.
안녕 친구야, 패트릭이 테이프를 정말 좋아했어! 하지만 내가 자기 시크릿 산타라는 걸 눈치챈 것 같아. 그런 테이프를 만들 사람은 나밖에 없다는 걸 패트릭도 알 테니까.
He also knows what my handwriting looks like. I don’t know why I don’t think of these things until it’s too late.
게다가 내 글씨체가 어떤지도 알고 있거든. 왜 난 항상 일이 벌어지고 나서야 이런 걸 깨닫는지 모르겠어.
I really should have saved it for my last present. Incidentally, I have thought of my second gift for Patrick.
그건 마지막 선물로 아껴뒀어야 했는데 말이야. 아무튼, 패트릭을 위한 두 번째 선물을 생각해냈어.
