It was my great aunt, the one who usually locks herself in the bathroom. “Amen.” And somehow that made it all right.
평소 화장실에 들어가 문을 잠가버리곤 하던 이모할머니였어. “아멘.” 그 한마디에 왠지 모든 게 괜찮아졌어.
할아버지의 성화에 늘 도망치듯 화장실에 숨던 이모할머니가 찰리의 말에 긍정적인 아멘으로 화답하며 긴장을 해소해 주는 묘한 연대감이 느껴지는 장면입니다.
When we were all getting ready to leave, I walked up to my grandfather and gave him a hug and a kiss on the cheek.
이제 다들 떠날 채비를 할 때, 난 할아버지께 다가가 안아드리고 볼에 입을 맞췄어.
He wiped my lip print off with his palm and gave me a look. He doesn’t like the boys in the family to touch him.
할아버지는 손바닥으로 내 입술 자국을 닦아내며 슥 쳐다보시더라. 할아버지는 집안 남자애들이 몸을 만지는 걸 별로 안 좋아하시거든.
But I’m very glad that I did it anyway in case he dies. I never got to do that with my Aunt Helen.
하지만 혹시라도 할아버지가 돌아가실지 모르니까 그렇게 하길 잘했다는 생각이 들어. 헬렌 이모한테는 미처 그러지 못했으니까.

새로운 날짜의 편지가 시작되었습니다. 추수감사절이 지나고 이제 본격적인 크리스마스 시즌인 12월이 되었습니다.
Dear friend, Have you ever heard of a thing called “Secret Santa?”
안녕 친구야, 혹시 ‘시크릿 산타(Secret Santa)’라고 들어봤어?
시크릿 산타(Secret Santa)는 제비뽑기로 정해진 상대방에게 정체를 숨기고 몰래 선물을 주는 놀이로, 한국의 마니또와 비슷합니다.
It’s this activity where a group of friends draw names out of a hat,
친구들끼리 모자 속에서 이름을 하나씩 뽑는 활동이야.
and they are supposed to buy a lot of Christmas presents for whatever person they choose.
그럼 자기가 뽑은 사람에게 크리스마스 선물을 잔뜩 챙겨줘야 하는 거지.
The presents are “secretly” placed in their lockers when they’re not there.
선물들은 주인들이 자리에 없을 때 사물함에 ‘몰래’ 넣어둬.
미국 학교에서 사물함(locker)은 개인의 사적인 공간이자, 친구들끼리 선물을 몰래 넣어두는 등 소통의 창구로 활용되곤 합니다.
Then, at the end, you have a party, and all the people reveal who they really are as they give their last presents.
그러고 나서 마지막에 파티를 여는데, 그때 마지막 선물을 주면서 자기가 누구인지 정체를 밝히는 거야.
Sam started doing this with her group of friends three years ago. Now, it’s some tradition.
