In middle school, Susan was very fun to be around.
중학교 때 수잔은 같이 있으면 정말 즐거운 애였어.
She liked movies, and her brother Frank made her tapes of this great music that she shared with us.

But over the summer she had her braces taken off, and she got a little taller and prettier and grew breasts.
그런데 여름 방학 동안 치아 교정기를 뺐고, 키도 좀 커지고 예뻐졌어. 가슴도 나오기 시작했고.
Now, she acts a lot dumber in the hallways, especially when boys are around.
이제 수잔은 복도에서, 특히 남자애들 근처에 있을 때 훨씬 멍청하게 굴어.
And I think it’s sad because Susan doesn’t look as happy.
난 그게 좀 슬픈 것 같아. 수잔이 예전만큼 행복해 보이지 않거든.
To tell you the truth, she doesn’t like to admit she’s in the advanced English class,
사실 수잔은 자기가 심화 영어 수업을 듣는다는 걸 인정하고 싶어 하지 않아.
and she doesn’t like to say “hi” to me in the hall anymore.
그리고 이제 복도에서 나한테 아는 척하는 것도 싫어해.
When Susan was at the guidance counselor meeting about Michael,
수잔이 마이클의 일 때문에 상담 선생님을 만났을 때,
she said that Michael once told her that she was the prettiest girl in the whole world, braces and all.
마이클이 언젠가 자기한테 교정기 낀 모습까지 포함해서 세상에서 제일 예쁜 여자애라고 말해줬었다고 하더라.
Then, he asked her to “go with him,” which was a big deal at any school. They call it “going out” in high school.
그러고 나서 마이클이 자기랑 ‘사귀자’고 했대. 그건 어느 학교에서든 큰일이지. 고등학교에서는 그걸 ‘데이트한다’고 불러.
go with him과 going out은 모두 이성교제를 뜻하는 표현입니다. 중학교와 고등학교에서 쓰이는 용어의 차이를 언급하고 있습니다.
And they kissed and talked about movies, and she missed him terribly because he was her best friend.
둘은 키스도 하고 영화 이야기도 나눴대. 마이클은 수잔의 가장 친한 친구였기 때문에 수잔은 마이클을 끔찍이도 그리워했어.
It’s funny, too, because boys and girls normally weren’t best friends around my school. But Michael and Susan were.
이것도 참 묘해. 우리 학교 근처에선 원래 남자애랑 여자애가 단짝 친구인 경우는 별로 없거든. 하지만 마이클이랑 수잔은 그랬어.
