6월 16일의 새로운 기록입니다. 졸업식이 끝나고 찰리의 마지막 등교일이군요.
Dear friend, I just rode home on the bus.
안녕 친구야, 방금 버스를 타고 집에 왔어.
It was the last day of school for me today. And it was raining.
오늘은 나의 마지막 등교일이었어. 그리고 비가 내리고 있었지.
When I do ride the bus, I usually sit toward the middle
난 버스를 탈 때 보통 중간쯤에 앉아.
because I’ve heard sitting in the front is for nerds and sitting in the back is for squids, and the whole thing makes me nervous.
앞쪽은 공부벌레들 자리고 뒤쪽은 멍청이들 자리라고 들었거든. 그런 것들을 신경 쓰다 보면 왠지 긴장하게 돼.
nerds(공부벌레)와 squids(멍청이)는 당시 미국의 학교 문화에서 학생들을 분류하고 서열화하던 전형적인 은어들입니다.
I don’t know what they call “squids” in other schools.
다른 학교에서는 그런 애들을 뭐라고 부르는지 모르겠네.
Anyway, today I decided to sit in the front with my legs over the whole seat.
아무튼 오늘은 맨 앞자리에 앉아서 두 다리를 좌석 위로 쭉 뻗기로 했어.
Kind of like I was lying down with my back to the window. I did this so I could look back at the other kids on the bus.
창문을 등지고 거의 누워 있는 듯한 자세였지. 버스에 탄 다른 애들을 뒤돌아보고 싶어서 그렇게 앉은 거야.
I’m glad school buses don’t have seat belts, or else I wouldn’t have been able to do it.
스쿨버스에 안전벨트가 없어서 다행이야. 안 그랬으면 그런 자세로 앉지 못했을 테니까.
The one thing I noticed was how different everyone looked.
한 가지 눈에 띈 건, 다들 정말 다르게 보였다는 거야.
When we were all little, we used to sing songs on the bus ride home from the last day of school.
우리가 아주 어렸을 때는 학년 마지막 날 버스를 타고 집에 오면서 다 같이 노래를 부르곤 했어.
