Craig kept promising he would, but he never did it. There was always some excuse.
크레이그는 그러겠다고 계속 약속하면서도 절대 말하지 않았어. 항상 핑계가 있었지.
Craig called them “reasons.” “I don’t want to ruin the prom for her.”
크레이그는 그걸 ‘이유’라고 불렀어. “샘의 졸업 파티를 망치고 싶지 않아.”
자신의 기만행위를 정당화하기 위해 상대방을 위하는 척 이유(reasons)를 갖다 붙이는 모습입니다.
“I don’t want to ruin graduation for her.” “I don’t want to ruin the show for her.”
“졸업식을 망치고 싶지 않아.” “공연을 망치고 싶지 않아.”
Then, finally, Craig said there was no point telling her anything at all.
그러더니 결국엔 이제 와서 말해봤자 아무 소용 없다고 하더래.
She was about to go away to college anyway. She would find a new guy.
어차피 곧 대학에 갈 거고, 그럼 새로운 남자를 만날 거라면서 말이야.
He was always “safe” about other girls. There was nothing to worry about in that way.
자기는 다른 여자들 만날 때 항상 ‘안전’하게 행동했으니까 그런 쪽으로는 걱정할 게 없다고도 했대.
여기서 safe(안전한)는 피임 등을 철저히 하여 신체적인 문제는 만들지 않았다는 뜻입니다. 정서적 배신은 안중에도 없는 자기중심적인 태도가 돋보입니다.
And why not just let Sam remember the whole experience in a good way?
그리고 샘이 우리 관계를 그냥 좋은 추억으로 간직하게 두는 게 낫지 않겠냐는 거였지.
Because he really liked Sam and didn’t want to hurt her feelings.
자기도 샘을 정말 좋아하고, 샘에게 상처 주고 싶지 않다면서 말이야.
Peter went along with this logic even though he thought it was wrong.
피터 형은 그게 잘못된 생각이라고 생각하면서도 일단은 그 논리를 받아들였어.
At least that’s what he said. But then after the show yesterday, Craig told him that he fooled around with yet another girl the afternoon of the prom.
적어도 형 말로는 그래. 그런데 어제 공연이 끝나고 나서, 크레이그가 졸업 파티 당일 오후에도 또 다른 여자랑 놀아났다고 형한테 털어놓은 거야.
That’s when Peter told Craig that if Craig didn’t say something to Sam, he would.
그때 피터 형이 크레이그에게 말했대. 네가 샘한테 말하지 않으면 자기가 직접 말하겠다고.
