반면 나머지 한 명인 나에게는 반대편에 아주 넉넉한 공간이 있었다.
So of course I noticed this, but I was hoping Ms. Rubin wouldn't notice this, because I didn't want her to say something.
당연히 나는 그 상황을 눈치챘지만, 루빈 선생님이 눈치채지 못하기를 바랐다. 선생님이 그 문제로 한마디 하시는 걸 원치 않았기 때문이다.
But of course she did notice this, and of course she said something.
하지만 선생님은 당연하다는 듯 그 상황을 알아차리셨고, 역시나 한마디 하셨다.
“Guys, there's plenty of room on that side. Tristan, Nino, go over there,” she said, so Tristan and Nino scooted over to my side.
“얘들아, 저쪽 자리가 아주 넉넉하네요. 트리스탄, 니노, 저쪽으로 가세요.” 선생님의 말씀에 트리스탄과 니노가 내 쪽으로 자리를 옮겼다.
Tristan and Nino have always been okay-nice to me. I want to go on record as saying that.
트리스탄과 니노는 언제나 나에게 나쁘지 않게 대해 주었다. 이 점은 분명히 기록해 두고 싶다.
트리스탄(Tristan)과 니노(Nino)는 어거스트와 과학 선택 과목을 함께 듣는 친구들입니다. 앞서 생일 파티 명단에서 이름이 잠깐 언급되기도 했던 이들은 어거스트를 평범한 학급 친구로 대하는 모습을 보여줍니다.
Not super-nice, like they go out of their way to hang out with me, but okay-nice, like they say hello to me and talk to me like normal.
나랑 놀아 주려고 특별히 애를 쓰는 엄청 친절한 애들은 아니었지만, 그래도 마주치면 인사도 하고 평범하게 대화도 나누는 괜찮은 애들이었다.
And they didn't even make a face when Ms. Rubin told them to come on my side, which a lot of kids do when they think I'm not looking.
심지어 루빈 선생님이 내 쪽으로 가라고 했을 때도 싫은 내색조차 하지 않았다. 내가 안 본다고 생각할 때 많은 아이가 짓는 그런 표정 말이다.
Anyway, everything was going fine until Tristan's mystery powder started melting.
어쨌든 모든 게 순조로웠는데, 트리스탄의 미스터리 가루가 녹기 시작하면서 사달이 났다.
He moved his foil off the plate just as my powder began to melt, too, which is why I went to move mine off the plate,
마침 내 가루도 녹기 시작해서 호일을 판 위에서 옮기려던 참에 트리스탄도 자기 호일을 옮기려 했다.
and then my hand accidentally bumped his hand for a fraction of a second.
그러다 찰나의 순간이었지만 실수로 내 손이 그의 손과 부딪히고 말았다.
Tristan jerked his hand away so fast he dropped his foil on the floor while also knocking everyone else's foil off the heating plate.
트리스탄은 내 손이 닿자마자 소스라치게 놀라며 손을 홱 뺐다. 그 바람에 자기가 들고 있던 호일을 바닥에 떨어뜨린 것은 물론, 가열판 위에 있던 다른 아이들의 호일까지 전부 밀어뜨리고 말았다.
“Tristan!” yelled Ms. Rubin, but Tristan didn't even care about the spilled powder on the floor or that he ruined the experiment.
“트리스탄!” 루빈 선생님이 소리쳤지만, 트리스탄은 바닥에 쏟아진 가루나 실험을 망쳤다는 사실 따위에는 안중에도 없었다.
