“So by the end of the year, you’ll all have your own list of precepts to take away with you.”

“People really do that?” said one girl whose name I didn’t know.
“정말로 그렇게 하는 사람이 있어요?” 이름을 모르는 한 여자아이가 물었다.
“Oh yeah!” he answered, “people really do that. I’ve had students send me new precepts years after they’ve graduated from this school, actually.”
“오, 물론이죠!” 선생님이 대답하셨다. “정말로 다들 그렇게 한답니다. 사실 졸업한 지 몇 년이 지난 제자들이 새로운 격언을 보내오는 일도 있어요.”
“It’s pretty amazing.” He paused and stroked his beard.
“정말 놀라운 일이죠.” 선생님은 잠시 말을 멈추고 수염을 쓰다듬으셨다.
“But, anyway, next summer seems like a long way off, I know,” he joked, which made us laugh.
“하지만 어쨌든 내년 여름은 아직 한참 남았으니까요.” 선생님은 농담을 하셨고 우리는 모두 웃음을 터뜨렸다.
“So, everybody relax a bit while I take attendance, and then when we’re finished with that,”
“자, 이제 출석을 부르는 동안 다들 좀 쉬세요. 출석 체크가 끝나면,”
“I’ll start telling you about all the fun stuff we’re going to be doing this year—in English.”
“올 한 해 영어 수업 시간에 우리가 할 재미있는 일들에 대해 이야기해 줄게요.”
He pointed to Jack when he said this, which was also funny, so we all laughed at that.
선생님은 이 말을 하며 잭을 가리키셨다. 그 모습도 우스워서 우리는 다시 한번 웃었다.
As I wrote down Mr. Browne’s September precept, I suddenly realized that I was going to like school. No matter what.
