학교 앞 배웅
The graduation ceremony was held in the Beecher Prep Upper School auditorium.
졸업식은 비처 중학교 고학년 건물의 강당에서 열렸다.
졸업식 당일 아침, 학교로 향하는 차 안으로 장면이 전환됩니다. 어거스트는 생애 첫 학교 졸업식을 앞두고 긴장과 설렘이 교차하는 모습이군요.
It was only about a fifteen-minute walk from our house to the other campus building,
우리 집에서 다른 캠퍼스 건물까지는 걸어서 15분 정도밖에 안 되는 거리였다.
but Dad drove me because I was all dressed up and had on new shiny black shoes that weren’t broken in yet and I didn’t want my feet to hurt.
하지만 아빠가 차로 나를 태워다 주셨다. 한껏 차려입은 데다 아직 길들지 않은 반짝이는 새 검정 구두를 신고 있어서 발이 아픈 게 싫었기 때문이다.
Students were supposed to arrive at the auditorium an hour before the ceremony started,
학생들은 식이 시작되기 한 시간 전까지 강당에 도착해야 했다.
but we got there even earlier, so we sat in the car and waited. Dad turned on the CD player, and our favorite song came on.
그런데 우리는 훨씬 더 일찍 도착하는 바람에 차 안에 앉아 기다려야 했다. 아빠가 CD 플레이어를 켰고, 우리가 가장 좋아하는 노래가 흘러나왔다.
We both smiled and started bobbing our heads to the music. Dad sang along with the song:
우리는 미소를 지으며 음악에 맞춰 고개를 까닥거리기 시작했다. 아빠는 노래를 따라 불렀다.
“Andy would bicycle across town in the rain to bring you candy.”
“앤디는 너에게 사탕을 전해주려 빗속에서 자전거를 타고 마을을 가로질러 오겠지.”
아빠가 흥얼거리는 가사는 실제 밴드 The Magnetic Fields(더 마그네틱 필즈)의 노래인 The Luckiest Guy on the Lower East Side입니다. 아빠와 어거스트의 평소 취향과 유대감을 엿볼 수 있는 대목이죠.
“Hey, is my tie on straight?” I said. He looked and straightened it a tiny bit as he kept on singing:
“아빠, 제 넥타이 똑바로 매졌어요?” 내가 물었다. 아빠는 노래를 계속 부르면서 내 넥타이를 살피더니 아주 살짝 매만져 주셨다.
“And John would buy the gown for you to wear to the prom...”
“그리고 존은 네가 졸업 파티 때 입을 가운을 사줄 거야...”
