“Yeah.” I nodded. “He was homeschooled, Julian!” said Charlotte.
“응.” 나는 고개를 끄덕였다. “줄리안, 얘는 집에서 공부했다고!” 샬롯이 말했다.
“So teachers came to his house?” asked Julian, looking puzzled.
“그럼 선생님이 집에 오셨던 거야?” 줄리안이 의아한 표정으로 물었다.
“No, his mother taught him!” answered Charlotte. “Is she a teacher?” Julian said.
“아니, 엄마가 가르쳐 주셨어!” 샬롯이 대답했다. “엄마가 선생님이셔?” 줄리안이 물었다.
“Is your mother a teacher?” Charlotte asked me. “No,” I said.
“너희 엄마 선생님이야?” 샬롯이 내게 물었다. “아니.” 내가 대답했다.
“So she's not a real teacher!” said Julian, as if that proved his point.
“거봐, 그럼 정식 교사가 아니시잖아!” 줄리안이 자기 말이 맞다는 듯 말했다.
“That's what I mean. How can someone who's not a real teacher actually teach science?”
“내 말이 그거야. 정식 선생님도 아닌 사람이 어떻게 과학을 가르칠 수 있겠어?”
“I'm sure you'll do fine,” said Charlotte, looking at me. “Let's just go to the library now,” Jack called out, sounding really bored.
“넌 분명히 잘해낼 거야.” 샬롯이 나를 보며 말했다. “이제 그만 도서관으로 가자.” 잭이 정말 지루하다는 듯 소리쳤다.
“Why is your hair so long?” Julian said to me. He sounded like he was annoyed.
“너 머리는 왜 그렇게 길어?” 줄리안이 내게 물었다. 짜증이 난 듯한 말투였다.
I didn't know what to say, so I just shrugged. “Can I ask you a question?” he said.
뭐라고 해야 할지 몰라서 나는 그냥 어깨를 으쓱했다. “뭐 하나 물어봐도 돼?” 그가 말했다.
I shrugged again. Didn't he just ask me a question?
나는 다시 어깨를 으쓱했다. 방금 물어본 건 질문이 아니었나?
“What's the deal with your face? I mean, were you in a fire or something?”
“네 얼굴은 왜 그래? 내 말은, 불에 데기라도 한 거야, 아니면 뭐 그런 거야?”
줄리안이 어거스트가 가장 피하고 싶어 했던 외모에 관한 무례하고 직설적인 질문을 던지며 긴장감이 고조되는 순간입니다.
“Julian, that's so rude!” said Charlotte. “I'm not being rude,” said Julian, “I'm just asking a question.”
“줄리안, 진짜 무례해!” 샬롯이 소리쳤다. “무례하게 군 거 아니야.” 줄리안이 대꾸했다. “난 그냥 질문을 한 것뿐이라고.”
