thugs(서그)는 폭력배나 깡패를 뜻하는 거친 단어입니다. 아들을 괴롭힌 아이들을 향한 엄마의 강한 불쾌감이 묻어나는 표현이죠.
I kind of laughed at the way she said the word “thugs.” “What?” she asked.
나는 엄마가 ‘깡패’라는 단어를 쓰는 방식에 웃음이 났다. “왜 그러니?” 엄마가 물으셨다.
“Thugs,” I teased her. “That's kind of an old-fashioned word.”
“깡패요.” 내가 엄마를 놀렸다. “그거 좀 옛날 사람들이 쓰는 말 같잖아요.”
“Okay, jerks. Morons. Imbeciles,” she said, flipping over the sandwich in the pan.
“그래, 그럼 양아치들, 바보들, 멍청이들.” 엄마가 팬 위에서 샌드위치를 뒤집으며 말씀하셨다.
“Cretinos, as my mother would have said. Whatever you want to call them, if I saw them on the street, I would...” She shook her head.
“우리 엄마 말씀대로라면 ‘천치’들이라고 하셨겠지. 뭐라 부르든 길에서 그 녀석들을 마주치기만 한다면 내가 아주...” 엄마는 고개를 절레절레 저으셨다.
Cretinos(크레치누스)는 바보나 천치를 뜻하는 포르투갈어입니다. 엄마가 브라질 출신이라는 배경이 자연스럽게 드러나는 대목입니다.
“They were pretty big, Mom.” I smiled. “Seventh graders, I think.”
“그 애들 꽤 컸어요, 엄마.” 내가 미소 지었다. “아마 중학교 1, 2학년쯤 됐을걸요.”
She shook her head. “Seventh graders? Mr. Tushman didn't tell us that. Oh my goodness.”
엄마가 고개를 저으셨다. “중학교 1, 2학년이라고? 터시먼 선생님은 그런 말씀은 안 하셨는데. 세상에나.”
“Did he tell you how Jack stood up for me?” I said. “And Amos was like, bam, he rammed right into the leader.”
“잭이 저를 어떻게 지켜줬는지도 말씀하셨어요?” 내가 물었다. “에이모스는 그냥 쾅 하고 우두머리한테 들이받아 버렸거든요.”
“They both crashed to the ground, like in a real fight! It was pretty awesome. Amos's lip was bleeding and everything.”
“둘 다 바닥에 나뒹굴었는데 진짜 싸움 같았어요! 완전 멋있었죠. 에이모스는 입술에서 피도 났다니까요.”
“He told us there was a fight, but...,” she said, looking at me with her eyebrows raised.
“싸움이 있었다고는 하셨지만...” 엄마가 눈썹을 치켜올리고 나를 쳐다보며 말씀하셨다.
“I'm just... phew... I'm just so grateful you and Amos and Jack are fine.”
“그냥... 휴... 너랑 에이모스, 잭이 무사해서 정말 다행이구나.”
