“Are you a freak, too?” said Eddie. “They’re all a bunch of freaks!” said one of his friends.

Amos didn’t answer them but looked at us. “Come on, guys, let’s go. Mr. Tushman’s waiting for us.”
에이모스는 대꾸도 하지 않고 우리를 보며 말했다. “자, 어서 가자. 터시먼 교장 선생님이 기다리고 계셔.”
I knew that was a lie, but I helped Jack get up, and we started walking over to Amos.
그게 거짓말이라는 걸 알았지만, 나는 잭이 일어나는 걸 도와 에이모스 쪽으로 걷기 시작했다.
Then out of the blue, the Eddie guy grabbed my hood as I passed by him, yanking it really hard so I was pulled backward and fell flat on my back.
그런데 난데없이 곁을 지나가던 나를 에디가 붙잡더니 내 후드를 세게 잡아챘다. 나는 뒤로 끌려가며 그대로 나자빠졌다.
It was a hard fall, and I hurt my elbow pretty bad on a rock.
꽤 세게 넘어지는 바람에 바닥에 있던 돌에 팔꿈치를 호되게 찧었다.
I couldn’t really see what happened afterward, except that Amos rammed into the Eddie guy like a monster truck
그다음에 무슨 일이 벌어졌는지는 제대로 보지 못했다. 다만 에이모스가 몬스터 트럭처럼 에디에게 돌진하는 모습만 보였을 뿐이다.
monster truck(몬스터 트럭)은 집채만 한 바퀴를 장착한 강력한 힘의 차량입니다. 에이모스가 에디를 향해 거침없이 몸을 날렸음을 짐작하게 합니다.
and they both fell down to the ground next to me. Everything got really crazy after that.
두 사람은 내 옆 바닥으로 한데 엉겨 쓰러졌다. 그 이후로는 말 그대로 난장판이 되었다.
Someone pulled me up by my sleeve and yelled, “Run!” and someone else screamed, “Get ’em!” at the same time,
누군가 내 소매를 잡아 일으키며 “뛰어!”라고 외쳤고, 동시에 또 다른 누군가는 “저놈들 잡아!”라고 고함을 질렀다.
and for a few seconds I actually had two people pulling the sleeves of my sweatshirt in opposite directions.
불과 몇 초 동안, 실제로 두 사람이 내 후드티 소매를 서로 다른 방향으로 잡아당기는 바람에 몸이 갈가리 찢기는 줄 알았다.
I heard them both cursing, until my sweatshirt ripped and the first guy yanked me by my arm
두 녀석이 욕설을 내뱉는 소리가 들리더니, 내 후드티가 직 찢어지는 소리와 함께 첫 번째 녀석이 내 팔을 홱 잡아당겼다.
and started pulling me behind him as we ran, which I did as fast as I could.
그는 나를 뒤에 달고 뛰기 시작했고, 나 역시 죽을힘을 다해 녀석의 뒤를 따랐다.
I could hear footsteps just behind us, chasing us, and voices shouting and girls screaming,
우리 바로 뒤에서 추격해 오는 발자국 소리와 고함치는 소리, 그리고 여자애들의 비명 소리가 들려왔다.
